The Rundown

It’s a porky affair at Tipsy Boar, the latest restaurant to join the Section 17 neighbourhood. Chef-owner Suren Krishnan once ran the kitchen at craft beer joint, The Great Beer Bar, dishing out similarly meaty grub. Now in his own restaurant, he showcases his way with meat with a multi-cuisine menu — expect to see Western fare, Malaysian flavours and even a traditional Filipino dish. Bottoms up at Tipsy Boar; you're in for satisfying dinner and drinks.

The Vibe

Amidst the cafes, restaurants and offices along this block, it’s easy to spot Tipsy Boar thanks to its bright, pink and yellow signboard. The space is unadorned; dark grey walls with a pop of yellow surround the room. The spotlight is on an adorable drawing of a pig in a cape, gripping a bottle of wine — tipsy boar indeed. We love how spacious the place is, which makes it great for meals with family and friends, as dishes are also made for sharing.

What’s Good

It’s all about the meats here but you’ll also find pastas and salads on the menu. For individual plates, look to the ‘Something Comforting’ section on the menu for belly-filling mains. Go for the braised pork Curry Rice Bowl (RM22) for a hearty lunch, or the Salted Egg Bacon Pasta (RM28) if you love rich, savoury flavours. We were keen to try the sisig, the Filipino dish made using various parts of the pigs (first boiled and then fried). Tipsy Boar’s Sizzling Sisig (RM25) features pork cheeks and ears, served on a sizzling plate and topped with an oozy poached egg and spring onions. It’s intensely appetising and will have you digging in for more. Squeeze in the calamansi on the side for extra zing, and throw in the red chilli if you can handle the heat. The sisig comes with a choice of rice or double cream mashed potatoes on the side; we say go with latter as it goes really well with the pork.

A must-order is the deliciously tender BBQ US Pork Ribs (from RM26 for 400g), which yields two meaty slabs of ribs glazed in a lovely sweet and peppery sauce. The meat was juicy and tender all the way through, though we wish there was extra sauce to go around for dipping. For an additional RM10, you get to choose two sides to go with the ribs — do it. We really enjoyed the Watermelon Mint Yoghurt Salad, which supplies bright, refreshing flavours to help cut through the richness. The deep-fried Lotus Root chips takes us back to our Chinese New Year snacking days, adding a nice crunch to the meal. If you’re with a big group, the ‘Something to Share’ section sports dishes to feed four to six people — think Serrano Ham (RM78 for 200g) with fresh local melon slices for starters and a supersized portion of the ribs. Complement your meats with wine at RM25 per glass, or wash it down with a refreshing beer or cider — they serve Carlsberg, Asahi and Somersby. P.s. Bring the gang to enjoy their all day beer promo at RM69 for five glasses of Carlsberg draught.
