Hi Li, It’s Me Again

It's hard to find that one restaurant you can always turn to, rain or shine. But blessed with foodie luck, Burppler Sunita S discovered Li. She talks to us about her tasty, long-term relationship with the neighbourhood joint!

Coffee, Nosh and So Much More
Three years ago, my friend (oh what a good friend) invited me for dinner at Li. I remember the space being this bare, white-walled space, and the food, spot-on. While the interior has changed over the years to include bar seats and a beautifully rustic coffee corner, the food and the people behind Li have remained as charming and delightful as ever. To find this offbeat spot along one of the oldest streets in Damansara Jaya, look out for a standout emerald shopfront. Through the display, you’ll spot the fluffiest golden brown sourdough loaves and, emerging from behind the espresso machine counter, the unmistakable whiff of freshly brewed coffee.

You’ll Never Li(eve) Hungry
The thing about dining at Li is that you almost always know you’re going to walk (or roll) out of there happy and belly-filled. First, you start with their sinfully delicious Pork Toast (RM9.90). Then comes mains, yummy mains. I’m not much of a meat-eater, but even I can’t help but order the House Rice Bowl (RM17.90). It’s wonderful — culinarily engineered to feel like a warm hug in the form of steamed rice, crispy roasted chicken and a perfectly poached egg, all drizzled with chilli mayo. But I’ve also found that Li is good for every occasion. On sick days, I turn to their comfort-giving Ikan Bilis Congee (RM9.90) and, when I feel like going green, the hearty Mushroom Linguine (RM16.90).

But wait — I’m not done. I always have space for dessert, and so, the Soy Milk Panna Cotta (RM10) is one of my must-orders. Served with sago and pineapple jam, the soy panna cotta is reminiscent of tau fu fa, if tau fu fa got an upgrade. If you’re a bread-lover like me, you’re going to want to pick up a whole loaf of Sourdough (RM10) and a jar of their insanely creamy Sous-Vide Kaya (RM7.90) for the next day’s breakfast.

Yours FaithfulLi
People say restaurants have to constantly change up their menus; keep things fresh to find success. Li doesn’t — well not obsessively, anyway. The team loves what they do, and it comes through in the warm service and stalwart fare. Every time I visit, I’m convinced that the chicken is a little crispier, the rice a little more fragrant, and the dish simply a touch better than the last time I had it.  You’d think that I’d be sick of eating the same things here after three years, but I never loved Li for their newsiness; I love them for making something so familiar taste so good every single time.
