International Coffee Day 2020: Cafes You Need To Visit

The most caffeinated of holidays is here! Sip on a good cuppa at cafes like % Arabica, PPP Coffee, and more in honour of this brew-tiful occasion.

The thought of freshly roasted beans wafting through the air really makes us want to go out and have a good cup of joe. And what better time than in honour of International Coffee Day on 1 October? Whether you prefer a rich black filter cup or a sweeter caramel-flavoured drink, these coffee joints have you covered.

Did you know that PPP, short for Papa Palheta, are the folks behind the famous Chye Seng Huat Hardware cafe? They've since added a more accessible location at Funan Mall last year, bringing with them an extensive array of coffee offerings. The Throwback Blend is the default blend that PPP serves, and Burppler Ems Huang describes it as "notes are dark chocolates and roasted nuts. It's a nice, full body flavour and less acidic." Try the special drinks like The Huat Shake ($9.80) and Papa's Iced Coffee ($8.80) too!

% Arabica (Arab Street)

Yes, it's Kyoto’s extremely popular coffee chain-turned Singapore's most Instagram-ed cafe this year. With branches in Arab Street, Holland Village, [email protected], and Jewel Changi, you'd likely have spotted their iconic 'percent' logo somewhere. Co-founded by the award-winning barista Junichi Yamaguchi, the cafe's beans are cultivated in Hawaii and roasted fresh daily in Singapore.

Their coffee is known to be very balanced between milk and coffee, which Burppler Ikigai J describes as "medium-bodied, a little chocolate nutty finish." Get the regular Caffe Latte ($8) or the condensed milk-version (Spanish Latte, from $7.80), for something sweeter.

One Man Coffee

One Man Coffee is all about having one barista crafting one coffee for one person - in other words, the perfect brew for you. With outlets in Upper Thompson and Fusionopolis (temporarily closed), it's easier than ever to get your coffee fix. Choose from a varied filter coffee list or go from a classic espresso-based drink from ~$5. Burppler Ashley Looi says the Long Black "is very well-brewed in a way that was aromatic and strong with balanced bitterness." while Burppler Hannah Tan enjoyed the "light, smooth and hearty" White Cold Brew.

The Glasshouse

The Glasshouse is usually quite packed, but once you manage to get in, you're in for a treat. Filled with plants, natural lighting and view of the CHIJMES garden, this gorgeous white cafe serves up excellent artisanal brews. Burppler F J says their Iced Whites and regular White Coffee are consistently good, and also recommends their single origin hot chocolate. Burppler Fi T agrees, saying the coffee here is "smooth, velvety and a semi-bitter coffee aroma had me finish my cuppa way faster than I wanted to."

Soma Coffee

Head here for a decent and affordable cup of joe in the CBD (Soma is located at [email protected] near Tanjong Pagar). Sip on their creamy Flat White ($4.80) or Kyoto Drip ($5.30) for smooth coffee that's full of gorgeous aromas. Burppler withtappy - also recommends the Mochaccino ($4.80) or Hazelnut Latte ($4.80) for a nutty and roasted flavour profile.

Shift (Amoy Street)

Swing by this popular hole-in-the-wall coffee spot a few minutes away from Telok Ayer MRT for a quick takeaway or cool coffee break. Burppler Siska Endi says the coffee here is "legit. Well balanced with really good milk frothing." Even their oat milk versions are delicious, as Burppler Sarah Peh claims that "it's so nutty and wholesome with oat milk and the aroma of their coffee lingers on your tongue with every sip."

Elixir Boutique Roasters

Burpplers say this cafe has amazing brunch food, but the heart of Elixir Boutique Roasters is really the coffee, from single-origin filter brews to tasty iced coffees. Burppler Nat N. tried the Ice White and says it is "delicious! Past the milk, the acidity was not too forward and I liked the milk chocolate flavour notes and even a hint of roasted nuts. I’ll definitely be back for more mains the next time I’m in the area!"
