Pomfret Fish Soup with rice $15.90
Seafood Soup with rice $6.90

Very nice fish soup.

With a history stretching back to 1988, and a consistent quality that led to backing by the BreadTalk Group, this stall is beloved for its fresh range of fish, including unique ones like pomfret.
.
Their fresh boneless red garoupa fish slices are thick and bouncy, meaty with clean sweet savoury flavour.
.
Garnishes of lettuce, garland chrysanthemum, ginger, and preserved mustard greens, lend a crisp crunch, with robust vegetal earthy bitter spice salty sweet flavour.
.
The soup tends towards the salty savoury side, so most folks add on the tender minced pork, to balance with its meaty sweet savoury notes. Nicely paired with white rice.
.
However, price point is premium, among the more expensive renditions.

Long queue during a weekday lunch here.

They still have a wide variety of fishes, except now pomfret is always not avaliable on the menu anymore.

While queuing up, had my heart set on the more premium grouper fish slices, alas, it was sold out by the time it was my turn. Decided to get the batang fish slices instead.

The disappointment of missing out on the grouper didn't last long though, as I was delighted by how fresh and nice the batang fish slices were.

There was generous amount of vegetables, fish was fresh and soft, soup was flavourful but a bit salty.

Overall quite an excellent bowl of fish soup.

Batang Fish slices... very excellent.

I kept coming back here despite the long queue because they serve really fresh and good fish soup. It is one of the places I would think of whenever I am craving fish soup or wanting to have something hot in cold weather.

The fishes here are very fresh and succulent. The soup is light and flavourful with some hints of sweetness and saltiness in it. They are very generous with the amount of fish and other ingredients they throw into the bowl. We ordered a bigger portion to share among the two of us and it was sufficient to fill both bellies 》$10 + $0.50 Minced Pork + $0.50 Bitter Gourd

The soup was tasty and relatively light, but got a little more salty at the bottom due to the bits of the shallots and whatnot. The batang fish slices were fresh, succulent and had a good bite! However, the pomfret was slightly fishy, with many small bones present - I’ll say go for the batang. We added minced pork (+$0.50) for one of the bowls and it is a good addition, as it was well seasoned and tender, bringing extra flavour to the soup. P.s. the rice is very dry, not a big fan.

We queued ~1 hour for this for a weekend lunch. It’s a good place for fish soup, and I would probably revisit if I was in the area / the queues are shorter, but Han Kee at Amoy still takes the spot as #1 :)

Not only is Upper Serangoon Road a hub for late-night🌃 supper spots, but it’s also where First Street Teochew Fish Soup is operating to serve only the breakfast and lunch crowds. Be prepared to witness a snaking long queue around the coffee shop and expect to wait for up to 30-45 minutes! For those that are bored of the usual Batang fish, you can also go for their Red Garoupa or Pomfret which comes with a higher price-tag.

What stood out most to me was their fresh and succulent slices of Batang fish that devoid of any fishy aftertaste. Perfectly sliced to the right thickness, the generous amount of fish slices will surely give you the best bang for your buck💸. As for the broth, it was great but not mind-blowing🤯.

P.S. Will definitely opt to add minced pork ($0.50) next time! And maybe fish roe ($1.50) too😋
