Their wanton mee is v nice! It’s thin & very springy, coated in a light sauce (I think it might be sesame oil + their charsiew sauce?). V similar to feifei roasted noodles @ yuhua (my fav!). But I did feel like there was a slight alkaline taste.
Wantons had quite a decent amount of meat filling, liked that they used water chestnuts so there was the cronch element.
The charsiew is really good - it’s tender and juicy, there’s a nice mix of fatty + lean parts, and the ends have a nice slight char so those parts are crisp. It is feels “cleaner” and not as sinful compared to other charsiews out there, but still v delicious so I liked it a lot!
They’re closing on 15 June because the owner wants to take a rest! We actually queued almost 3 hours for this on sat. It’s a v nice satisfying meal, glad we tried it before it closed, since it’s been on my wishlist since 2 years ago hahaha
Got a long time never eat roast food such as char siew and also roasted meat ($5) at outside because I always taobao back home for neighbourhood coffee shop. Didn't expected that char siew got that strong charocal taste but I felt that its quite fattening for me. Probably need to request for lean meat. I also like their roasted meat not that salty and also fattening too. 😅
Foong Kee is probably better known for their wanton mee but their roast meats are really awesome as well.
Their siu yok is well marinated and has a nice thin shatteringly crisp crackling even though I was there late in the day. Their char siew was also really good though not Fei Fei-good as a certain learned friend of mine would probably say.
If you are in the area and looking for some cheap and good food, you should most definitely check Foong Kee out!
Feeds 2 very satisfyingly with rice
Second time here and the standard remains. Siobak has the obvious crackle, with a "melting" aspect when you first put it in your mouth.
Charsiu was super fatty and tender, really sweet glaze that doesn't seem out of place at all. Not super charred, but depends on the batch I guess because as we were leaving we saw the new batch being rather blackened. The sauce is even sweeter than the marinade, and I gotta say you rarely taste the honey in most sauces but here, you do. Despite the sweetness it's Hella addictive though
Be prepared to queue during lunch hours, there's A LOT of takeaways
$8
Roasted duck good
Roasted pork crispy good
Char siew excellent
$20 portion is just enough for 4-5 pax. Very good portion of fats and lean meat, crisp well done and tender enough. Definitely worth a trip downtown to get this.
