Reviews

From the Burpple community

Served in both black or white version with the former coated with a dark sweet sauce while the white has a crisper edge. Both versions came in much smaller pieces than what you normally get elsewhere and the main shiok factor is that a lot of eggs were used in the frying process. There are three portion options, pictured is the medium $4.50.

Started in the 1960s by Ng Keng Chow, his humble pushcart became known as 'Tiong Bahru Carrot Cake', and retained the name even after they moved into the Clementi market in the 1980s.
.
Having patronised them for over 20 years, I remember Uncle Ng's iconic straw hat, and the 2 large pans he used... 1 to marinate the carrot cake cubes in chye poh / preserved radish, fish sauce, and vegetable oil. The other pan to stir fry, dual-wielding 2 ladles and using broad circular strokes, almost like he was swimming.
.
He handed over to son & daughter-in-law Ng Joong Yew and Jessy Lee in 2010, and they changed the stall name to its current, with grandson Brandon Ng coming on in 2019. Cooking style remains the same, using the 2 large pans.
.
Having eaten at more than 40 different carrot cake stalls across Singapore, this stall remains my ultimate favourite.
.
They cut the carrot cake cubes small, and are generous with the chye poh / preserved radish and eggs, resulting in a soft moist fluffy texture, while the edges are a little crispy.
.
I prefer the black version, laced with a generous helping of sweet dark soy sauce, a bold sweet savoury eggy salty smoky flavour. The white version, which looks almost similar, holds enticing savoury salty eggy sweet smoky flavour.
.
The chili lends a bit of spicy kick, so yummy. Eating here is a pilgrimage of sorts, requiring careful planning.

Be prepared to queue for at least 15 mins, and maybe even up to 45 mins on peak periods like Saturday morning. In case you didn’t know, the 26-year-old young hawker takes over the stall in the afternoon while his parents operate in the morning.😄

Queued about 15 mins on a late Sunday afternoon and ordered this delicious mess…

Even if you can’t tahan spicy food, I’d highly recommend to order this with chilli. You won’t regret having that slight kick to every mouthful!😋

Can’t wait to be back to try their black version, though I’m hardly in Clementi area…🥲

I liked the white carrot cake over the black one here.

Really loved this stall when I was staying in clementi.

Travelled all the way from punggol to have this again.

Have been eating this stall since the 90s

The next generation has taken over. Now served by 2 younger cooks.

Still tasted as good as before when it was by the elderly cook.

Cai poh overload.

Not so sweet.

While queuing you can clearly see the master-in-training on the frying pan and hear the clink and clank of the spatula chopping up the steamed radish cake before he pours in a huge amount of eggs into the mixture. The fried carrot cake is smaller in pieces and as a result, each bite has a nice char and bite to it as the edges are crisped up. If you like your carrot cake eggy and crispy, this is the place to go to satisfy your cravings.
