Surprised by how modern the shop was when I visited Geylang Claypot Rice. It was clean, aesthetically pleasing, and honestly, an attractive place for tourists to patronise. Went on a Friday night and managed to be seated immediately, although as with all claypot rice, they warned us that a 30 minute wait is necessary.

The claypot rice was served the classic way, hot and mixed right in front of you. This claypot rice has a good amount of ingredients for its price - chicken, sausages, and salted fish, all of which is a must have for me. The chicken was not as juicy as I’d like it to be and the chilli on the side didn’t give that nice punch with the savouriness of the rice. But I enjoyed the texture of the rice and the bits of salted fish that you’d get. In all, I’d think it’s a good place to satisfy your claypot rice cravings because of how accessible and affordable it is!

Do call ahead in advance to avoid having to wait for 30 mins when you order on the spot! So good

The soup of the day on our visit was pork ribs with lotus root. It was something light, sweet and flavourful to start off our meal while waiting for the claypot rice to arrive 》$9.80

Each pot is served with toppings of pork belly, salted fish, chicken chunks, lup cheong (Chinese sausages) and fresh vegetables. The claypot rice is cooked over the charcoal fire so do call and order in advance or prepare to wait 30 minutes as they cook this upon ordering.

When the claypot arrived on our table, the server would help to add the dark soy sauce and mix them all together to achieve a sweet, savoury and smoky flavour from cooking over charcoal. The portion for the small claypot (1-2pax) was quite an amount that we think it can fill up to 3 pax. The chicken was cooked just right and was moist and flavourful. There is a layer of crispy rice bits at the side and bottom for those who love digging and scraping them off the pot 》$16.80/small (1-2pax)

I’ve been here twice in less than a month. The first time I ordered the 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒖𝒎 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒑𝒐𝒕($28.80) which serves 3-4 pax and the second time I ordered the 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒖𝒎 8 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝑨𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒆 ($55). Each pot is served with toppings of pork belly, bits of salted mackerel fish, well-marinated chicken, two types of lup cheong, and fresh vegetables. I appreciate how the server helped to add dark soy sauce as I never know how much to add. The portion is very generous and can feed more than 4 pax for light eaters. The chicken inside was succulent and tender (there are a few dry pieces but they were mostly tender). I love the guo ba which is the burnt rice parts. They were crispy and not burnt at all.

Eating claypot rice requires patience as the staff has mentioned to us that there are only a limited number of charcoal stoves in the kitchen and each claypot rice requires near to 30 minutes of cooking time. We were fortunate that day to get a table almost immediately when we were there as our previous attempts to dine there did not materialised due to the long queuing time just for an empty table. Alternatively, you can also pre order your claypot rice orders and collect them for takeaways or prior to dining in.

At Geylang Claypot Rice, besides their Classic Claypot Rice (Pictured is the $16 portion for 1-2 pax), you can order a host of other zichar dishes from seafood to tofu, vegetables, meat and other rice/noodle dishes. Their signature claypot rice comes in a huge portion for the $16 portion with generous amounts of chicken chunks and variety of sliced Chinese sausages and waxed meat in it, giving it a nice aroma and flavour. I would wish for more salted fish added to it to give it more umami-ness and will definitely top up there is an option for it. Otherwise, good location, comfortable air conditioned environment and value for money.
