From the Burpple community

The Salmon (Aburi) Mentaiko Donburi ($15) was satisfying too with their own mentai sauce slathered over the slices. Embellished with briny ikura and tobiko, the rice bowl was not overly seasoned (saltish) and rather well-balanced. Although the slices were thin, they were fresh-tasting and were cooked perfectly - almost melts in the mouth. The sauce had a good flavour, not too jelat, and got a nice smoky boost from the torching as well.

Thank you @gyunamisg and @burpple for the invite!

A decent spot for a quick and fuss-free meal in town, Gyu Nami is on #Burpplebeyond with 2 donburis going at $25! Known for their wagyu beef dons, they also serve a handful of mains and sides on their compact menu.

Done to a lovely medium rare, the signature Roasted Wagyu Beef Donburi ($15) was a pretty sight with a runny yolk at the very top and a generous pour of their housemade yoghurt sauce. The peppered Australian wagyu slices were lean and soft; with a mild beefy flavour. Hence, the bulk of the flavour came from the light yoghurt sauce and the sweet-savoury sauce found drizzled on the rice. I especially enjoyed dipping into and mixing the egg with the beef.

Thank you @gyunamisg and @burpple for the invite!

This was the signature dish in this small little cozy restaurant! Soft and tender beef slices were delicately placed on the top of the rice, served with an onsen egg and a special home made yogurt-based sauce. This was enjoyable in every aspect, from the aesthetics to the soft and juicy beef slices, to the creamy and flavourful yogurt that added flavors to the rice and the beef! It also came with a bowl of miso soup which complemented the rice. Overall it was a simple yet very hearty and delicious meal.

Tucked in a corner of Orchard Gateway lies a hole in the wall Japanese donburi shop. Their signature dish - the beef donburi, looked very impressive. The thinly sliced wagyu beef was deliciously roasted till medium rare and aesthetically wrapped around the rice. At the side, a refreshing yogurt sauce flows, complementing its savoury counterparts. And finally, at the top, an egg lies, although we broke the yolk for a more dramatic picture. :P

This is my second time having this dish. I would say that the quality of food here is good and seems consistent. Initially I thought that the amount of beef is quite little - but taking into account the quality, price, and location, I actually think it’s pretty reasonable, given that some donburis in hawkers or less accessible areas are getting quite expensive now, or taking a compromise on quality.

If you’re looking for decent donburis in the Orchard area, Gyu Nami is a safe pick - you get a decent bowl for a reasonable price, and can enjoy it in a casual dining setting. With Burpple Beyond, you can get two bowls for $25, saving $5.

The shop has vintage Japanese posters lining its walls, and an impressive amount of boxes of anime figurines - apparently won from claw machines by the owner. If you’re curious, do ask the owner more about it - he is very friendly and appears happy to share interesting stories about his shop and hobbies.

Thank you Burpple for the invite, and Gyu Nami for hosting us!

The unagi was really fresh and soft, not fishy at all! The part I ate didn’t have big bones which is definitely a plus when I eat unagi fish. The fish was very tasty and sweet as it was drizzled in their homemade sauce and furikake. The sauce and furikake were also generously served on the rice too, which made the rice very flavourful and enjoyable to eat alongside the unagi. There was even a surprise poached egg below the unagi which made the whole dish burst with more flavours and was more creamy.
