Food quality: 3.5/5

Ordered cottage fries ($16), Ah Nya's Fish curry ($32) and Octopus Bakar and Sambal Udang ($42)

The cottage fries caught me by surprise when it was served. I was expecting usual fries but it is actually roasted baby potatoes. Quite nice to begin with but got abit too jelat thereafter.

The fish curry dish was extremely well cooked. The fish is tender and goes well with the curry. There is also toasted bread served at the side for us to dip the curry with. The bread has a slight toasted surface (freshly toasted!!) and that goes well with the curry. It also comes with fried long beans that is still crunchy when served.

The seafood dish is slightly disappointing. While we can taste the slight char on the surface of the seafood + fresh seafood used, it was nothing too surprising.

Overall, the restaurant has relatively relaxed ambience is and a comfortable place to chill with friends in.

Had always been looking forward to revisit Hathaway — was pretty impressed by what they have to offer when we made our first visit several months ago when they had first opened, with the Ah Nya’s Fish Curry still lingering in my head.

Having more pax to share around the food here this time round, apart from having the Ah Nya’s Fish Curry that we missed, we also went for other items that we have yet to try before, including some of the side dishes. The Black Cod & Razor Clams was something that I especially liked — a dish that would fit those with a lighter palate. Featuring elements such as Deep Sea Sablefish, Hand Dived Razor Clams and a Miso Kombu Broth, what we loved was that light and somewhat milky Miso Kombu Broth that provides for a lightly creamy, yet slightly savoury note that almost replicates that of a collagen broth. The broth adds much of the richness in terms of flavour to the fish — the cod fish was a wee bit dry to our liking but still undeniably fresh; perhaps less smooth considering how they seemingly have flash-fried the fish skin here for that extra crispness for a contrast of texture. The razor clams are also fresh; not seemingly briny whilst carrying a qq texture — what really works well with entire ordeal here will be the nibs of garlic here which gave it a roasty, sweet yet savoury note that binds really perfectly with the Miso Kombu Broth here, providing a much needed flavour to pair with the razor clams.

It’s pretty amazing to know how Hathaway is a venture by the same folks behind Breadyard; a spot perhaps better known for their in-house bakes that also serves up brunch fare that is typically found in cafes elsewhere. Hathaway is a whole different establishment from Breadyard; one that seemingly exudes some Balinese vibes that serves up their very own interpretation of Peranakan fare with a slight twist. Definitely a spot fit for an occasion that serves up something different for the tastebuds to explore.

Hathaway at Dempsey is a Muslim-friendly Modern Asian restaurant in Dempsey that I was suppose to visit earlier this year. Since I didn’t manage to make it down, I accepted @ivanjohnting’s invitation try their food via delivery.
Although full in flavour, I found every dish very polished, surprisingly precise and clean in taste. Ingredients were of top quality and presentation was neat and well-thought out. Here’s what Ivan chose for us to try:

1. Octopus Bakar & Sambal Udang ($42) - Loved this seafood bonanza of smoky, very tender octopus and three massive prawns coated in a spicy chilli sambal. There’s a thin layer of silky mash at the bottom that caught all the juices, so scooping that up was a must. Definitely one of my top two favourites from the meal.
2. Ah Nya’s Fish Curry ($32) - This was my other favourite. Based on an heirloom recipe, it had a lip-smacking, spicy gravy and flawlessly cooked local barramundi from @kuhlbarra. Crunchy fried okra and toasted bread were served alongside - the former to be tossed into the curry just before eating, the latter to be dunked.
3. Nasi Ulam - Garnished with micro herbs, the yellow rice was fluffy and really aromatic.
4. Bone Marrow ($24) - Didn’t expect to see this but oh yes please! The melt-in-the-mouth marrow was accessorised with kicap manis and a layer of herbed crumb for bonus flavour and texture. A squeeze of lime added a welcome spark of cut-through.
5. Kale & Wing Bean Salad ($18) - What a healthy marriage of Western and Asian vegetables this was. Pomegranate, quinoa and apricot sherry vinaigrette were used to jazz up the perky crunchy greens.
6. Kueh Salat - Dessert went the traditional Asian route.
