Each bowl of Hoe Heng's lor mee comes with deep fried fritters which the stallholder has kindly placed in a separate bowl. Besides ngoh hiang, there is fried dough fritters and wantons.
Hoe Heng's lor mee starts at $4 per bowl and is one of the few lor mee stalls I know which open till late at night, perfect for those who are craving it for dinner or supper!
I have read a lot about Hoe Heng which serves porridge by day and lor mee by night! I mean how different can it get!
Do not however underestimate Hoe Heng's lor mee because it is good and solid. The gravy is thick but not too starchy with a nice hint of five-spice. I like that there are pieces of soft tender slow cooked pork in the gravy which adds a nice meaty flavour.
Was so excited, had stirred and spooned half of it into my tummy before deciding to take a photo. Chockful of ingredients (this was the cuttlefish one), and the pork porridge was full of pork balls, lean pork, pork liver. $3.50 with egg; tasty and generous. Great value!
