Happy to have discovered this unassuming roadside stall that doles out hearty Vietnamese and Chinese-ish eats! The Beef Hor Fun, is in fact, pho, and is done considerably well. Loads of coriander, basil (mostly stems?) and spring onion pepper the broth, which has a thin yet tasty, sweet beefy flavour. Expect also lots of beef slices, several slivers of tendon, smooth flat noodles - lots of it - and a mild chilli sauce on the side.
Hometown Vietnam Kitchen’s Chinese and Vietnamese influence is prominent in this dish – the broth reminds me of fish head noodles, from the tomatoes and white tofu with a beef pho base. It’s a little sour but that’s what makes it special.
Here they call it hor fun, but it’s actually beef pho. This no-frills bowl of noodles is one I can count on if I’m ever craving pho.
Think fried yee mee but lighter in flavour, with a bit of sweetness. This is great dish for a quick lunch. Add a squeeze of lime and drizzle some of that spicy chilli for more zing.
