This humble pork cutlet set is an act of self-care that makes shuttling between my back-to-back campus activities slightly more bearable. Relieve those memories of the struggle during class/projects/exams/club, all for the price of $5.90... (additional $1 off for SMU students)

More cutlet than pork but the crispiness makes up for it, and pairs excellently with the generous gravy (mix braised and curry sauce if you're indecisive) atop a heap of rice.

You also have a choice of 3 sides. I highly recommend going for the braised cabbage - a simple but incredible accompaniment. Pictured is also the long beans and ikan bilis/peanuts.

SMU KIDS BE SLEEPING ON HONG SENG CURRY RICE!! Idk why SMU kids don’t rly patronise this place but it’s so underrated and good I’ve been having it since I was Y1!!

Here are my recommendations of what you should order:
- braised cabbage is super and rly tasty
- braised egg is not overcooked and goes rly well w the rice
- curry sauce - pls don’t get the mix sauce because it really DILUTES how thick and spicy the curry sauce is.
- for meats, the har cheong gai, crispy chicken cutlet or pork belly is the best. I find that their signature pork chops are actually rly tough and dry...
- chilli sauce - SPICY, a bit tangy and very tasty, it used to be in a squeeze bottle but with COVID now you have to request for it!

Tried this new salmon mentaiko don ($6.90) that comes with edadame onsen egg and beancurd with chilli crab sauce

Venue: SMU
Cost: $5.90 with drinks
Description:
The curry is really good with the onsen egg that is just nice :) Mixed with the salmon and braised tofu. Is the right food to choice for lunch or dinner. Affordable & Tasty

Choice of meat + choice of rice (Japanese rice or brown rice) + choice of gravy + + choice of 3 sides + 1 canned drink from $5.50 onwards. Love the unique curry sauce and decent portions. Definitely value for money and I sure will return!

Hong Seng Curry Rice Express at SMU now has a monthly special — for the month of April, the Special is a Creamy Tom Yum Katsu Bowl that carries elements such as Crispy Chicken Katsu that is drenched in Creamy Tom Yum Sauce, Hae Bee Hiam, Onsen Egg, and Hainanese Curry Sauce.

Being the first time here, it is interesting to see them offer a brown rice option for health conscious folks which I also opted for. I was initially skeptical about the Hainanese Curry and Tom Yum combination which seemingly sounded conflicting, but both flavours were distinct — the Chicken Katsu was crisp with tender meat which surprisingly wasn’t dry (pretty good considering I had this past 7pm); the creamy Tom Yum carried that promised sour and spicy flavour combination whilst being made creamy with coconut milk. It does not interfere with the thick, gloopy curry sauce that is drenched the brown rice. The onsen egg was a tad disappointing for how it lacked a flowy yolk, while the Hae Bee Hiam whilst adding a crisp texture to the brown rice if eaten together, verges towards saltiness for me. Still, a pretty good takeaway meal that would satisfy the tummies of students at SMU — school food that is actually delicious; not just something to rid the hunger with.
