There are several stalls here selling chicken rice with Tian Tian being the most famous. While Hong Xiang’s chicken taste not much juicy as compared to other, it still can be the alternative choice for chicken rice at Maxwell Food Centre.
Surprise, Maxwell ain't just about Ah Tai and Tian Tian chicken rice! Hong Xiang is probably the most low key of the chicken rice stalls there, which is great since I don't need to deal with a bunch of people just to get my food.
Now, I don't know how good their steamed Hainanese style chicken is, but their soya sauce chicken can give quite a few of the better places selling soya sauce chicken a damn good run for their money.
The thigh meat is stunningly smooth, moist and tender with a heady hint of herbs from the lor it was stewed in, and every one of the slices was bursting with so much flavor. Better yet, they're pretty generous with their bird portioning too! Pictured above is the $5 plate, which is one satisfying serving of soya sauce chicken.
Unfortunately, their chicken rice was a bit of a deal breaker. It was quite aromatic, but it was oddly bland on the palette, and it was overly greasy. The stall holder is too generous with his drizzling of soya sauce, as a majority of the rice was far too salty from the over-enthusiastic spraying of soya sauce onto the rice.
Hong Xiang's soya sauce chicken is one sterling option for saucy birds, but giving the rice a hard pass seems to be the smart play to make.
