Is it just me or does anyone realizes that many of the Korean restaurants, especially those selling jajangmyeon, along Tanjong Pagar Road are decked in red and black?

Putting the exterior décor aside, the Korean fried chicken at Hong Jjajang is probably one of the few times that we did not finish or enjoy. So much so, the Korean fried chicken pales in comparison to the jajangmyeon. All the terms that should be not be associated with Korean fried chicken is evident here; very dry meat, thick and hard batter, sauce is too sweet and the inside flavour tastes very similar to a KFC chicken. The jajangmyeon however, fared much better for its chewy noodle texture and the black bean sauce is flavourful with a generous portion of onions in it.

Crispy outside, not too mushy inside. This is a carbo-bomb! When I was young-er, the Tanjong Pagar stretch of Korean restaurants really kept me going after nights out in town. It’s like a Korean-styled prata fix. This feeds 3-4 pax sharing btw.

Whoever thinks that the Jajjangmyeon/ Jjangpong set is meant for 2 pax is sorely mistaken! It will take at least 2-3 hungry male adults to finish both noodle dishes and the fried pork/ chicken. The peas really made the dish for me! Well-played. Mix it quick lest the noodles coagulate into a lump of dough.

Make it your personal mission to try all the Ko-Chi places along Tanjong Pagar/ Telok Ayer! Hong Jjajang is usually the spill-over place for O.bba Jajjang a few units down. That doesn’t mean it plays second fiddle to it’s more popular neighbour. The same separation of crispy fried pork and sauce is practiced here. While the meat has more a thicker coat of batter, the really gingery sauce cuts through flour and grease! Definitely a more flavourful sauce than O.bba IMHO.

Very generous with the ingredients including a small flower (?) crab for $14.

The soup is quite peppery. Not really a fan of it.

Army stew served with mozzarella.
Refillalbe refreshing soup with ingredients like sausage, luncheon meat and vegetables (can be dipped into melted mozzarella on the side).
