Café by Plain Vanilla

Dwell a little at Café by Plain Vanilla, a deli-style café that's part of the IN GOOD COMPANY Concept Store at ION Orchard. Introducing a new menu beyond Plain Vanilla’s famous cupcakes and small bakes, the café serves homemade granola and yoghurt bowls for breakfast, as well as other dining options in speciality sandwiches, homemade pastries and cakes. (Breakfast and grilled sandwiches are served till 4pm daily.) Plain Vanilla Bakery focuses on classic, familiar flavours to present heartfelt comfort food made in the philosophy of home-cooking. They skip the artificial ingredients and preservatives, relying instead on the natural flavours of ingredients. All their breads, cakes, and pastries are made from scratch in-house, as are their granola, jams, and other spreads. The Café also serves organic loose leaf teas, homemade iced teas and smoothies shaken in-house, made with real fruit and sweetened with agave nectar; and Browns Mill Organic coffee, a blend of medium roast beans from Sumatra, Mexico and Papua New Guinea, roasted by the good people of Allpress Espresso.

🤔: Lives up to its name of being a lemon loaf as it indeed has a sour kick to it. Found the glaze to be a bit too sweet for my liking, but my dad liked it so much he ate the entire slice.

🤔: Has a strong rosemary scent and was pretty moist, but was too sweet, at least to me. Had to wash it down with milk and only had 1/2 of it as I did not want to get a sugar high.

🤔: Pricey for a donut, but definitely worth the price and calories. The chocolate filling was rich and topped with hazelnuts - delicious! Dough was pillowy and slightly chewy, just the way I like it.

I like the crust - it is short and goes well with the filling. The milk chocolate filling is rich and sweet (not overly sweet given that it’s milk chocolate) but I find there is too much filling to crust so I did scrap a lot of the filling off. If you are a milk chocolate lover you will enjoy this tart.

I prefer the chocolate crust from their salted caramel truffle tart to this plain crust. I also prefer the dark chocolate filling to this. I only wish the salted caramel truffle tart came without the caramel. The addition of the caramel makes it far too sweet for me.

The cupcakes are quite nice, although it is not for me as the frosting is too sweet for my liking. It is a typical american buttercream that contains way too much sugar. Regardless, the cake itself is extremely fluffy and flavourful -- so if you like sweet frosting, this is for you!

Rich and hearty bakes! That Salted Caramel Cupcake ($4.20) was the best cupcake I've ever had in my life. You CANNOT go to Plain Vanilla and not order their cupcakes. Dense, moist and very rich. I had these all to myself, a little cheat day for me! Their Peanut Butter Brownie ($7) and Dark Chocolate Marble Cake ($5) are pretty awesome as well! But undoubtedly, hands down, the undisputed star was their Salted Caramel Cupcake. Money well spent and a must try!!
