Where can you find $4 hokkien mee/fried rice/hor fun in dhoby ghaut?
With air con too?

Ask for less oil.

From Isle Eating House’s new extension at the ground level of Parklane Shopping Centre, which serves up Bak Kut Teh, soups and a limited variety of Vietnamese noodles apart from the usual economic rice.

Liked the sweet and tangy broth, while the glass noodles were surprisingly springy. Carrots were soft; the element that added the slight sweetness in the broth, though the chunks of beef were inconsistent in terms of tenderness; some being slightly tougher than the rest. Still, a pretty comforting noodle dish; flavourful in its own right, and something that I would not mind going for again.

A place that I don't mind lunching at around the area due to it's rather convenient location — not the most delicious but I certainly do enjoy how they are quite generous with loads of charsiew while coming with fried wanton and soup wanton. Had it a couple of times, but the charsiew was strangely pale and stodgy on the day I decided to take this photo. Nonetheless, I really liked how there is ample dark sauce and chili to be tossed with the noodles for flavour, while the wantons are pretty decent with the fried ones being light and crisp while the soup ones are pretty slurpy without being too thick. Quite wallet-friendly at $3.50 considering what you get in return (as long as the pale and stodgy charsiew don't make a guest appearance on the plate :x)

Pretty much the more popular option at Isle Cafe apart from the noodle stall — the fare isn't the most spectacular but they do deliver in terms of taste pretty decently with a wide variety of dishes to choose from with some dishes being particularly being more tzechar like. They win when it comes to portion size — they give a good amount of ingredients and rice so the office folks whom dine there would never leave hungry, but what totally gets me is the self-service braised sauce and curry by the side which I will usually go for together just to replicate the mix of gravies for curry rice.

Probably the most affordable option that's also the most convenient for the office workers around Peace Centre/PoMo/Parklane Shopping Centre/WilkieEdge. For $3.50, the Pork Chop noodles come with grilled pork (yes; quite not the typical fried pork chop most stalls would serve up), fried wantons and soup wantons — that's quite a lot considering you don't get the fried ones in most scenarios. Sure, there's quite a lot to nitpick about this one; the food looks appealing considering it's generousity at first look but one is likely to realise that the wantons don't necessarily comes packed full of meat. That being said, Isle Cafe does check the boxes in the flavour department quite right; springy noodles laced in a decent amount of black sauce, considerably easy-to-chew pork chop that doesn't carry a porky stench yet still decently flavourful (it's done the same way as Ding Tai Fung's version; just way more toned down and cut in little strips — it fits the price category the Pork Chop Noodles are in perfectly) and crisp fried wantons. May not be the best around, but that grilled pork chop is certainly pretty unique, not to mention the quality seems to match up with the affordability.

(PS: their Wanton Mee sees a rather generous portion of rather decent char siew (not the very generically dyed ones) — it's something I actually look forward to having if I end up here for lunch.)

Really economical economical rice!

Located on the second floor of the dingy Parklane Shopping Mall along Selegie Rd is Isle Eating House. The queues here are spectacularly long but they are constantly moving.

The cafe sells economical rice; dishes like hor fun, fried rice and laksa; and fish soup. The longest queue belonged to the cai png vendor so being Singaporean, I decided to go for that.

To my amazement, I ordered rice with, mala chicken, salted egg yolk chicken, tofu with minced pork, spicy long bean and a fried egg, all for $5.30. Whut? The dishes were hot, fresh and yummy. If I'm in Selegie/Prinsep area and I need a good cheap meal, this is it.
