More Reviews of good food at Izakaya Shinjuku (Cuppage Plaza)

Delicious authentic Japanese cuisine in a humble eatery tucked in cuppage plaza. They are known for their great valued set meals. Their sashimi is really fresh and the tempura is served hot and crispy!
Taste: 4.5/5⭐️
Value: 5/5⭐️

The set came with tempura (2 prawns + some vegetables) and the truffle pork don. The pork was thinly sliced and very crispy.

While I enjoyed the set as a whole, I probably won’t get this again because I prefer my meat to have more bite. Will probably be back to try other dishes though.

Btw, this restaurant is very popular amongst Japanese businessmen so it must be pretty authentic! They also have $10 lunch sets so it’s pretty good for the office crowd.

The truffle grilled pork slices don was yummy πŸ˜‹ The pork slices were nicely grilled and goes well with the onsen egg. Wish they gave more pork slices though.

Skewers were good too! Definitely a decent izakaya place after work.

This dish is made with a miso base, hence the slight saltiness. There’s also konjac and radish in the stew too. Although salty, it is a comforting dish as it warms your stomach readily. Only for offal lovers!🐷

A hidden gem in cuppage plaza that offers lunch set daily at only $10 Nett.

All their lunch set comes with a bowl of rice, 1 portion of meat, 1 portion of vegetable, fruit and 1 bowl of miso soup.

In picture, I was having Miso pork set. It was good but not mind-blowing good. Regardless, it is still value for money. *Note* There is a limited quantity daily, so be there earlier to beat the lunch crowd!

Also I have checked with the staff, they will update their daily menu weekly on their facebook page. So Do check their facebook page first before heading down!

Stumbled upon this and decided to try the dish of the day and was definitely worth it. Rice was perfectly done together with juicy meat slices. Their sashimi slices were v thick and worth it too

Thick slices of salmon belly, that's so fresh, it literally to die for. Melty and soft, like butter in your mouth. You know that you had it good and legit when it's this mouth-watering. And also at the cool price of $28/plate, it is a little steep but forgivable for rare indulgence.

Anticipating the crunch of crispy batter and the subsequent bite of warm tender juicy meat within, I was instead met with a soggy exterior and barely lukewarm oily meat.

How they messed this up so badly is beyond me. Luckily it's an off-menu item here and other first time customers will be spared the pain of this monstrosity. This chicken should be Nan-Banned.

Go to Azmaya Honten on the third floor for my favourite Chicken Nanban so far.

A must order for me at every izakaya, however this disappoints with gummy, textureless pork belly and minimal wok hei.

Keria just downstairs does a superior version.

Sister outlet to Far East Plaza's Nanbantei, famous for their value-for-money lunch yakitori bento, this izakaya on the first floor of Cuppage Plaza is where you go in the night for the same skewers and more. The grilled skewer selection here is limited but straightforward. Go for the Asparagus Maki ($7.20 for two) β€” five thin asparagus sticks stacked to a skewer, wrapped with bacon. Unlike the skewers at Nanbantei where the marinade is key, the skewers served at Izakaya Shinjuku are lightly seasoned with salt. Another crowd favourite is the Toriteba ($7.50 for two) β€” two chicken wings on each skewer, perfectly crisp yet juicy. For something heartier, order their Garlic Fried Rice (from $6.50). It goes well with their Butabara Cabbage Miso Itame ($9.50) β€” stir-fried sweet cabbage leaves that hint of smokiness. Reservations highly recommended.
Avg price: $40 per person with drinks

Couldn't leave the izakaya without having some carbs in my system! πŸ˜‚ Ordered the large Garlic Fried Rice ($13) to share and I had no regrets about it! I'm guessing the ratio of rice to garlic is almost equal because there were SO MANY fried garlicky bits between the grains! Super yum for a garlic lover like me!

Never knew these cabbage dishes could be so addictive! It's a fail-proof yummy dish that is slowly becoming my must-order at every izakaya. I LOVE how much wok hei they have and the pork slices here are so tender (no chewy tendons)! Goes super well with rice too!

What's Japanese food without the raw, so of course I had to order the 3 type sashimi. And clearly it did not disappoint. We left it up to the chef to present what is fresh on the day, and we were left smiling and utterly pampered. Two of my favourite on a single plating was seriously orgasmic. The freshness of the sashimi slices shine through, and literally glow in front of my very eyes. The Uni were in gorgeous hues of yellow-gold, served with a small plate of seaweed, it's that kind of sushi that we all love. Seaweed rolled with Uni, without the rice, you will never get full and just keep indulging (if your wallet allow it). That burst of sea butter melts into your mouth, that I literally sigh in utter happiness. Gosh.. 😍

Located on the ground level of cuppage plaza, I followed the chatter of the Japanese in the restaurant and gave this place a shot. And boy, am I so glad. Everything tasted like Japan, detailed and but very simple cooking, that I can't help but to go "すごい" (awesome in Japanese). The garlic pork skewers that I ordered were well seasoned, charred lightly and absolutely juicy. The leek and garlic slices, added great flavours to the already fantastic pork belly. What wowed me was the garlic slices, they are absolutely divine. Crunchy and tasty, without leaving that strong garlic after breath. The chicken meatball, were minced coarsely. Well seasoned in teriyaki sauce, but tasted light despite the teriyaki. Definitely one of those great places that I will keep coming back for more.
