Even though I was feeling under the weather yesterday, I had a massive craving for this Mee Siam from “J and A Snacks Delight”. It’s been my go-to ever since I discovered it a few months ago.
Unlike many others with their insipid gravies, this eatery’s is “pekat” (thick) and wonderfully potent in sourness and spiciness. I also like that besides a whole hard-boiled egg, they throw on both “tau kwa” and “tau pok” (most places omit one or the other). Other plus points include the fat, crunchy blanched bean sprouts and fresh “koo chye” (chives).
The ironic thing is since this Mee Siam is so intense in taste, the lady boss had to cut back to serving it only on Sundays and Mondays. She explained that the older folks in the matured HDB estate of Jalan Batu found it too much to handle.

Since the Mee Siam at “J & A Snacks Delight” has become a recent favourite of mine, I was curious to see if their Mee Rebus would impress me just as much.
Well, it turned out to be really tasty. I liked that the fragrant gravy wasn’t too starchy and had a lovely hint of curry. The yellow noodles were cooked just right and came topped with a decent amount of “tau kwa”, a whole hard boiled egg, slices of green chilli, fried shallots and fresh “kng chye”. With a squeeze of the lime, the flavour profile brightened, making the entire bowl even more appetising.
I have to say though, as satisfying as this was, I feel the Mee Rebus at “My Makan Place” on Tanjong Katong Road still wins by a tiny margin with their more complex tasting gravy. It is however, also almost twice the price.

I had unearthed this gem one afternoon from a little eatery named “J&A Snacks Delight” located at Blk. 7 Jalan Batu. And it is my favourite Mee Siam at the moment.
The bodacious gravy is super “gao” (thick) and packs a spicy kick (even without sambal) as well as a mouthwatering sourness that keeps my picky tastebuds deliriously happy.
A must-try if you love your Mee Siam cooked in this style. And while you’re there, order their Popiah too. They do a tasty one.

I didn’t expect to enjoy the Popiah from “J & A Snacks Delight” as much as I did. It’s more savoury than sweet thanks to no overloading of the sweet black sauce, and is stuffed with a tasty simmered turnip filling. However, if you like your freshly assembled spring rolls to have a lot of fried batter for crunch and lettuce, you will be disappointed because this isn’t their style. But I do think their more traditional Popiah is really delicious. Even my mum thought so when I bought it for my parents to try.
“J & A Snacks Delight” is a little eatery located in a ground floor shop unit at Blk. 7 Jalan Batu, close to the corner coffeeshop selling the popular “Tanjong Rhu Pau”. Their menu is small but has the kind of food that I would order at the drop of a hat - think Mee Siam (theirs is also very good!), Mee Rebus and Rojak.
Seating is rather awkward with a few mismatched tables and chairs placed along the walkway outside. And due to the slightly slanted ground, not the most comfortable. But since their food is tasty, it really doesn’t matter. #willdoanythingforgoodfood
