I’ve never tried a chocolate matcha fusion drink so when I saw this at Joe & Dough, I definitely had to try it. A large hot chocolate matcha latte will set you back by $6.50, with an additional $0.60 if you wish to change the milk to soy milk. Quite a pricey addition as compared to other coffee joints.

The beverage was served to our table with pretty decent latte art - I found the contrast between the brown cocoa and pale green matcha very unique. Tastewise, this was more of a cocoa drink than a matcha drink. Like the matcha latte, the taste of matcha in this drink is quite faint. It does pass off as a decent cup of hot chocolate, although not the most chocolatey. Nice to try for a change, but not worth the price point for a reorder.

In addition to cakes and coffees, Joe & Dough offers up some non-caffeinated drinks such as matcha latte and more interestingly, chocolate matcha latte on their menu. We ordered both to try.

A large hot matcha latte costs $6.30, with the option to change to soy milk at an additional $0.60. At approximately a tenth of the cost of a drink at Joe & Dough, that’s quite a pricey addition! Anyway, the drinks were brought to our table quite quickly. Unlike the chocolate matcha latte, the matcha latte came without any latte art. Slightly disappointing, but what was more evident was the pale green foam usually indicative of a weakly flavoured matcha beverage. That proved to be true in this case. While the latte was nicely blended, the matcha taste wasn’t strong enough to leave an impression. Not worth the price point, unless more matcha is added.

Visited Joe & Dough at Novena Square 2 around 4pm on a Friday afternoon and it was packed! There were tons of groups sitting around having a cuppa and some students studying. Thankfully, a solo diner left his table soon enough.

We decided to get the well-rated gula melaka pandan cake to share and two large hot drinks. The total bill was $20. After trying this cake, I can understand why it’s been receiving great reviews from the Burpple community. The combination of pandan, topped with a layer of gula melaka, and dessicated coconut is a match made in heaven. The pandan cake wouldn’t make an impact on its own. It’s not fluffy enough to be a chiffon cake, it’s pretty dense, and just a decent pandan cake. Somehow the sweetness, and grainy texture of the gula melaka paste together with the coconut flakes, help to elevate the cake to the next level and make it truly outstanding. Joe & Dough’s gula melaka pandan cake is a light dessert that’s great for tea time and wouldn’t leave you feeling too stuffed. :) I’d definitely like to have this cake again!
