I usually avoid wanton mees with orange-tinged char siew, but the one here didn't look super dry and cardboard-y plus I really wanted to try Vietnamese wanton mee.

What really sets this bowl apart from local renditions is the lemongrass-tinged chilli, which has a pretty gentle bite but lingers on the lips for quite some time. Shiok! I liked both types of dumplings: tiny deep-fried wantons and plump, generously-filled boiled ones in the soup.

While I would definitely order this again, I'm also keen to try the off-the-menu daily specials next time we're here (e.g. banh mis on Fridays)!

Signature Char Siew Wanton Mee - You get a bowl of noodles tossed with black sauce, and topped with lettuce, lean slices of char siew and 2 crispy fried wantons.

Wanton Mee is something I can have on a daily basis without getting sick of, and Vietnamese cuisine is something I love — not sure how authentic or traditional this stall is (or if Traditional Vietnamese Wonton Noodles do exist in real life), but definitely got intrigued by what they have to offer when I came across a post on Instagram so decided to check them out.

This felt really really similar to the Malaysian variant — black sauce? Checked. Pork lard? Checked; it even comes with beansprouts too. Said yes to the chili; despite not looking particularly lethal with the base mainly still being black sauce, the chili isn't one that goes straight up to the head — it lingers around the lips, on the throat, but never flaming in the stomach while savoury from the black sauce. Noodles were springy, while the char siew felt rather generic though more on the porky side of things without a stench. The fried wantons were crisp, though the soup wantons are incredibly filled with more meat and packs a crunch. Overall, quite a decent eat — that is if one disregards authenticity/the dish's actual existence; things that I just can't vouch for since I had never been to Vietnam or heard of about until today.
