This is an invited tasting two months ago, at the famous old Kay Lee which was bought over for S$4m, then rapidly expanded.

I still like the char siew here, which was nicely barbecued with their secret marinate. Insist on their fatty cuts if you don't mind fats and calories, cos it's more juicy and flavourful. We however had mostly the lean parts which weren't great enough.
🔸
I'm uncomfortable with the roast duck though, which isn't the Kay Lee roast duck I remember. You could see from the look that it's dark red instead of black. I was told they have modified it to suit customer's preference who feedback that the old recipe were too dry, but I felt that this lacked character.
🔸
Summary tip: You can try their char siew if you happen to pass by, and request for their fatty parts which was really good.

3 Combi Meat Platter ($44 😱)

The star 🌟 here would be the caramelized honey glazed Char Siew! 😍 I could definitely taste the char on the outside while savouring the moist well-marbled meat!

Next was the Roast Duck! For me, the deciding factor of a good Roast Duck must be the crispy skin! The Skin here was crispy and tasty without being overly oily or containing the super thick layer of fat underneath.

Kay Lee has been around since the 1970s. For them to have been around this long, they must be doing it right! The meats were all sold out by 830pm when we were there!

Never been a char siew(caramelised roasted meat) fan, until I was exposed to the 'real' kind - which is 'black', not from being burnt, but the caramelisation of sugars from the long hours of roasting. It's not red-dyed like the usual we see.
Caramelised aromatic outer layer, when paired with a good cut of meat that is the right proportion of fat and lean - that is 😍. This was almost it, save for the fact that it was too lean because all the 'good' parts were sold out. There was that 1 last piece that made the magic though. Not cheap - $44 for this 3 combination platter meant for 6... but 4 can easily finish

Not too impressed with this $4million dollar acclaimed roast meat establishment at Katong. Not many made it to a listed company. That aside, the pork used is of good quality but flavours wise it's not coming through to me. Looks like the same style as 海外天 in KL, but still some way to go to close the gap.

It's neighbours were crowded on a Sunday night but surprisingly, this joint wasn't. I liked the siobak the best, the skin was really crispy. Followed by the charsiew, half of which had a nice fatty layer. The duck was alright, kinda tough.

Surprise, surprise! I found the prawn wantons at this famous roast meat shop more outstanding than the meats. Oh-so-casually wrapped in the soft silk of dumpling skin are pieces of fresh-tasting, sweet and bouncy prawns. We enjoyed our first bowl so much we had to order a second bowl straightway.
