More Reviews of good food at Kazan Japanese Cuisine (Chinatown Complex)

Comes with a miso soup. The food was served piping hot. The chicken became soggy because they doused a lot of sauce. They are in bite sizes too. I feel they could put more egg.

I can't believe it has taken me this long to learn about Kazan which serves good and cheap Japanese bento meals

Yes, it's mostly deep fried food but I am amazeby how they consistently manage to serve shattering crisp katsu cutlets. I am also a bit fan of their japanese curry which is both sweet and savoury and their teriyaki chicken.

For $6 to $8 for a meal, it is definitely good value!

Huge piece of unagi for the lunch set. This stall sell various wallet friendly Japanese bentos.

I don't actively seek out unagi but I can appreciate cheap and good unagi. By my standards, which are probably very low, this was good at this price point. Smoky, addictive, yummy sauce.

Famed for their Unagi Set ($8) and pocket-friendly Jap food, I pondered for a while and decided to go for a dish thatโ€™s less commonly found - Yuzu Chicken Cutlet. It was crunchy on the outside and succulent on the inside. I love that slight zesty kick from the yuzu which left me craving for more.

They served me a huge slab of Unagi in a long bento box. The unagi is glazed with their sauce. The meat was sweet from the sauce and very tender but there's so many small bones.. so it was abit weird when i was eating. The bones are totally edible though. ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฑ

My favourite Japanese quick fix in Chinatown.

Whenever Iโ€™m near Chinatown Complex and craving Japanese, Iโ€™m sure to come to Kazan. It offers a whole range of bento boxes thatโ€™s really bang for your buck.

One of the top sellers is the chicken teriyaki set. In the set, you get a sizeable portion of crispy fried chicken doused in a sweet teriyaki sauce on a bed of shredded lettuce, julienned Japanese pickles, a potent miso soup, a dollop of kewpie mayo and of course, Japanese rice. Iโ€™m also amazed at how fluffy and loose the Japanese rice was that I could just eat it on its own. For $5, thatโ€™s really insane value.

Tucked away at one end of Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre, this nondescript stall dishes up really quality Japanese rice bowls at a fraction of the price you'll pay in restaurants โ€” we heard it's a favourite among office executives in the area. Burpple Tastemaker Jason Wong ordered the Katsudon ($5), which sees freshly fried crispy pork cutlets covered in still slightly runny scrambled egg, sweet katsu sauce, soft onion and nori strips, atop a mound of well-cooked short grain rice. While the cook may take awhile to get your dish ready, Jason assures us that it is worth the wait, for he could taste the care that goes into the food; the hospitable service from the friendly auntie was a nice bonus! Other dishes you may wish to try include the Ebi Don Set ($5.50) and the Unagi Set ($8).

You could eat at Chinatown Complex everyday for a year and still not have fully plumbed the depths of the sprawling food labyrinth that is the largest hawker centre in Singapore. Case in point - this innocuous stall selling Japanese food nestled at the far end(or start, depending on where you enter from) of the hawker centre, where a small queue of office worker types wait patiently for their orders of high quality yet affordable donburi sets.

My katsudon came with freshly fried crispy pork cutlets covered in still slightly runny scrambled egg, sweet katsu sauce, soft onion and nori strips atop a mound of well cooked short grain rice. It may take a while, but you can taste the care that goes into the food, and service was hospitable from the friendly auntie too! Every order also comes with a bowl of miso soup and Japanese pickles.

Taste: 3.5/5

Unagi set - The unagi arrived glistening, due to its wonderfully caramelised exterior. While the skin was slightly crisp, the meat within was tender, boasting a rich, sweet flavour.

This tiny stall in the hawker centre gives similar eateries and even some popular Japanese restaurants a run for their money. Huge and crunchy breaded prawns on a bed of seasoned short-grain rice is made extra delicious with a runny egg and generous dollop of sweet caramelised onions infused with the savoury flavours of a good dashi stock.

Cost? 5-odd dollars. Satisfaction? Priceless. Return visits are guaranteed with the wide variety of Japanese bento sets that come in equally generous portions, such as huge slabs of teriyaki salmon and crispy chicken cutlets.

Not prepared to brave the snaking lunch queue? Go early during dinner before they close at 8pm. FYI: They are closed on Saturdays.

$8 for an Unagi Set and in Chinatown Complex? Not necessarily top quality unagi but definitely decent enough for a hawker stall. The only deterring factor is that this hawker centre has so many food options (both Michelin awarded and Bib Gourmand recipients) and at such a price point, it might not appeal much to the people living around the area.

The sweetness of the teriyaki sauce unfortunately over powered the pepper marinate, but it still tasted great nonetheless!! #ๅ‘จๆ—ฅๆœฌ้ค#gonnatryouteverythingonthemenuhehe #kazanjapanesecuisine #chinatown #cheapandgoodfood #stfoodtrending #tslmakan #burpplesg #burpple #exploresingapore #sghawker #chinatown #japanese #sgig #sgfood #sgfoodie #whati8today #onthetable

Pardon the long waiting time as each meal is made fresh on the spot after ordering. I usually go for the chicken cutlet curry but I was feeling a little adventurous that day and went for the Yuzu cutlet rice. It didn't disappoint at all!! The chicken was crispy and juicy as usual, with a tinge of citrus and sweetness ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ’ฆ And it came with a generous side of salad, picked vegetables and miso soup, all for $5?! #gonnatryouteverythingonthemenuhehe #kazanjapanesecuisine #chinatown #cheapandgoodfood #stfoodtrending #tslmakan #burpplesg #burpple #exploresingapore #sghawker #chinatown #japanese #sgig #sgfood #sgfoodie #whati8today #onthetable

At just $8, you get a rather big piece of well-seasoned unagi! Check out their other dishes, they are not bad too!
