For $9.50, you get a bowl of noodles chock full of ingredients and a drink. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth it!

Because we happened to be in the Upper Bukit Timah area, we walked along the bustling stretch of eateries facing Beauty World Shopping Mall in search of dinner. That’s how we ended up at “Lao Jiang Superior Soup”. I picked their signature dish - the “Superior Soup with Ipoh Hor Fun (dry style)” and was very pleased with my decision.
The soup was indeed flavourful but I feel it still can’t beat the super concentrated goodness cooked by “Yan Ji Seafood Soup” (the one at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre).
This stall’s did however, contain a good mix of ingredients: two prawns, a few pieces each of fish maw, sliced pork and fish, one fishball, one meatball, a little bit of minced pork plus beancurd skin rolls. Pretty decent for the $9.50 price tag.
Alter having some of my god-daughter’s soup version of the same dish, also with Ipoh Hor Fun, I have to say I prefer the dry. She also shared the same opinion. Not because the soup one wasn’t good but the noodles in the dry version came tossed in an appetising black sauce with pork lard oil. There were even small pieces of crunchy pork lard mixed in too. All of this made the smooth, soft strands of the Ipoh Hor Fun really fragrant and tasty.

Comes with drink and kway teow

I know it can seem pricey for a bowl of seafood soup but just considering the quality of ingredients, it's absolutely worth it. U have two pieces of grouper, sweet slices of abalone, one soft piece of fish maw and two meaty de-veined prawns. So that justifies the price. If it tastes like a normal bowl of seafood soup. But it doesn't; theres something about the soup which is very light, sweet, yet flavourful, so much so that it's actually hard to stop scooping spoonful after spoonful into ur mouth. The pork slices can be slightly tough but that's really all the complaints I have for my new all time favourite seafood soup. Be careful when you're about to finish tho as there are small pieces of fish bones(probably part of the reason why the soup is so good)

On any given day, I will have this.

I mean look at how cloudy that soup is. The broth is so flavourful, that not single drop is missed. The superior soup set, and almost everything comes in a pair, LITERALLY. Even the greens come in a pair. What you have in the bowl, a pair of mock abalone, a pair of meatball, a pair of fish maw, a pair of crunchy and decently sized prawns (peeled), a pair of Friend beancurd, slices of pork, and minced meat, and finally a MEASLY PIECE OF GROUPER.

Honestly, it's a fish soup bowl, I have everything but except fish slices. If I knew about this, I would add $3 for added batang slices.

Oh the set, comes with a drink.

Located opposite Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, this eatery is a good alternative if you want to have something local but not having to tolerate Singapore's heat and humidity.

You'll get to select from a variety of seafood combinations with your choice of noodles, but I just went with their signature seafood ipoh horfun ($8.80) which has ~2 pieces of every item (prawn, fried beancurd skin, abalone, sliced fish, fish maw, fish ball, pork ball, sliced pork, and minced pork) and a soft egg which I topped up $1.50 for. Evidently, the egg isn't well done since this is not a Japanese ramen restaurant afterall, but the rest of the ingredients were fresh and legit 👍 The soup was tasty (but I'm not sure if it's MSG-laden hahaha) but it can be sweeter (since so much seafood is being used right)!
