Here's a formidable ramen joint, run by true blue Japanese bossman who also runs Sanuki down the road. The outdoorsy setup sporting bench tables and chairs makes it prime for casual dinner and drinks with a friend or two, and for cheap! Try the Tonkotsu Ramen (RM9), as recommended by Tastemaker Nicholas Ng, for the umami chashu and rich, flavourful broth that steers clear of excessive oil. It's also what we believe to be the cheapest pork bone-based ramens in town. Coming in at a close second is the Miso Butter Ramen (RM10.50), miso-fragrant and equally creamy despite the lack of meat in its base. Most of the ramen dishes come with a halved marinated soft boiled egg, chashu and a flurry of crunchy beansprouts — but to avoid disappointment, make sure to skim over the description for specifics!
Avg price per person: RM15

Coming up under the wings of that one cool-looking Japanese guy who also gave us Sanuki Udon and Maruhi Sakaba in the area, this cosy joint serves ramen, rice and sides for what feels like a robbery. For just RM10.50, here's what I got. That miso butter broth is flavourful, and utterly delicious when slurped up with that abundance of beansprouts and ramen. Plus the consistency and texture of the noodles matches up!

Add on the Fried Chicken (RM13) if you're up for a hearty meal - they're the perfect ratio of crispy batter to meat.

Almost don't feel like telling people about this place lest there's a queue the next time I return but damn, it's so good that I just had to.

Zaru ramen is a type of chilled ramen noodle, served with julienned vegetables, a side of ajitsuke tamago (味付け玉子) and a slice of chashu (チャーシュー), a japanese take on the chinese barbecue pork. The noodle is served chilled with a side of dipping sauce.

As most people would be used to zaru udon or zaru soba, zaru ramen actually has a nice touch to it because of the ever so springy noodles. The chilled noodle is firmed up in the process and with a dip into the sauce, also known as tsuyu, softens them up making it right for the bite.

Tonkotsu ramen is a type of Japanese ramen noodle from Kyushu, famous for its tonkotsu (豚骨) which is pork bone broth, served with a side of ajitsuke tamago (味付け玉子), soy marinated boiled egg, roasted or braised pork belly, and vegetables.

The tonkotsu broth had a rich and thick layer of flavour, but like any experience ramen house, Lao Jia Lou manages to ensure that the unneeded layer of oil is skimmed off. The pork was full of umami and so tender you could easily ask for more than you need. The dish is pulled together with the ajitsuke tamago for that creamy soft cooked yolk. Just delicious.
