Hawker Story
This roast meat stall defo flies under the radar here, but it does pretty good roast chicken. Pictured is $5 worth of tender chunks of chicken breast, a steal for that amount of meat. Chicken is well-marinated and the slightly rubbery skin is flavorful.
What makes this stall stand out imo however, is it's chicken rice chili - specifically the more watery one in the black dish. Fresh, zingy, sweet and piquant, and loaded with ginger, it is the ultimate appetite-wheter. By far the best chicken rice chili I've tasted.
The accompanying soup is great as well. Light yet umami ๐
No queues and service from the old uncle is unfailing polite.
Do give this stall a try for the roast chicken! (skip the lacklustre and rubbery charsiew though) and remember to load up on the chili ๐
Pardon the ugly pic, but this is hands down the best YTF I've ever eaten (and I've eaten quite a few). Everything from the ingredients, the broth, complimentary soy beans and sauces to the price point is just commendable imho.
All the ingredients are SUPERBLY FRESH, but the star of the show has to be the TAU KWA (firm beancurd stuffed with fish paste) - incredibly fresh, densely packed and firm yet so soft, with a near melt-in-your-mouth texture when bit into. This is the epitome of handmade tau kwa I swear. I actually get cravings for this and it is the only Ytf place where I have actually picked 5 tau kwas and nothing else.
Moving on to the other aspects of this gem of an offering:
The broth is light yet flavourful. Not oily at all.
Soy beans are cooked just right, not too hard nor mushy. Goes really well with your choice of carbs.
Chili was subtly garlicky, not fiery but with a light touch of spice. Not at all oily. Sweet sauce was of just the right consistency - not too thick nor watery and deliciously sweet without being saccharine. Goes amazing with the ingredients.
Price point-wise, this is also a winner, at just 50c a piece, for a minimum of 5 pieces. For such quality and freshness all around, this is a definite steal.
Fried chicken cutlet with thin bee hoon in laksa gravy ($4). This. Was. Amaze. Balls. The laksa gravy was bomb - deep and rich in flavour, soul-satisfying. The thin bee hoon noodles absorbed the laksa gravy and were a delight to bite into. The batter on the chicken thigh was wondrously thin, fresh and crispy (the parts I belatedly managed to salvage from the gravy) and the meat itself was juicy and substantial. The only thing I'd probably do different the next time I'm back is to ask for the meat to be separated from the noodles/gravy itself, so that the fried bits could be properly savored.
$5 worth of char siew while waiting for Cantonese Delights to open in 5 minutes ๐
This was pretty memorable - perfectly caramelized, chunky lean meat that struck a good balance between juicy and firm, albeit some parts towards the end got abit dry (though I suspect it's due more to it being blown at with gusto by a ceiling fan). I like that the portion was sizeable and the edges of the meat were perfectly roasted without being burnt.
