decades old and still kicking ass
had chew that day but wonder about the other chiew's taste 100 metres down the road. felt like a cheater in a relationship. don't judge me. hahaha
what's for breakfast? honestly nothing beats eating freshly made bites made painstakingly by hand. at lai heng, they sell nothing but just petite bite size teochew kuehs; rice kueh, soon kueh and chinese chives kueh. perfect for breakfast or that little afternoon snack indulgence.
the extra touch here had to be the option to pan fry your kuehs. quality of skin is already a lovely thin and chewy to begin with (especially the soon and chinese chives) but that extra crisp and char after frying really up the game. for a real authentic treat, go with the chinese chives fillings which they serve generously. then, drizzle with complimentary dark sweet sauce and have a hearty one, teochew style at only $0.70 - $0.90 / pc.
i know, i know there is another famous stall around here. but how do i not support the stall that i have been patronising since childhood? must have been what, coming 40 years and standing strong? unlike places that uses rock sugar, chin hock uses pure chinese herbs in their soup and licorice root for that sweet finish. too herbal you say? wrong. this heavy concoction of herbs is surprisingly well balanced and come together harmiously to tame that gamey taste that you usually register. so it feels all comforting and easy to drink this tasty, even tonic soup if i may. their super fork tender mutton meat is also worthy of mention because they only choose young baby lambs. again, 3 decades making mutton soup, their mutton game has to be strong here! #burpplebtfc

chin hock mutton soup, #02-156
when you are activated for driving duty early in the morning but you don't mind. loving chewy kueh was like under a torrential peanuts rain before serving up. ratio of peanuts to kueh is just totally off the charts but shut up and just take my money! p.s: time yourself and pray you get a slice fresh off the pan though. price is rock steady and inflation free at $0.80 per piece.
if i really have to supper, make sure is worth it. at least frequent a hundred years old shop or serves one of the best murtakbaks around - zam zam has both. to know singapore’s food heritage, then you must not give Zam Zam a miss! p.s: why is the tomato sauce always taste better at indian shops? #burpple #burpplesg #burpproved #burpplebestbugis #zamzamrestaurant
old school love. soft pillowy kaya buns with a slight crisp on the exterior are definitely note worthy but i always tot the coffee here is just so so? still, this is a great heritage treat. i like mine kopi c gao kosong. whats your config?
crt tv, grime thickened old school light switches, rickety worn off marble top tables and THAT orange public phone, this is a kopitiam museum purely for your nostalgia indulgence. i wouldn't say it was the bestest brew yesterday though. but hey, for a slice of history over kopi ku yew (coffee with butter) and traditional toasts, why not right! p.s was a mouthful ordering my cup of "kopi-c gao kosong ku yew"
of just pure love and labor. nothing is more traditional than this. you wanna a heritage food that taste almost the same as 50 years ago, this is as close as it gets - your kueh served up still via hand poured rice flour mixture and "kiam pang" (salty savoury) chye poh swimming in nothing but pork lard oil.

always saddens me when uncle says, "no one is doing this anymore and no one is taking over"
now at level 5 of sime darby centre, the less prominent space does not mean it lost any of its crowd or die-hard fans. judgin by this orange fierce pot of curry (small, $23.50), free-flow briyani rice, free-flow veg stews and papadam, not hard to know why it is so popular. other fans favourite on the table are: chicken masala, chicken liver and sotong (small, $5.40 each). did i mention free-flow papadam? free-floooowwwww la dey, free-flow!!!
office went cray cray over galicier's pumpkin kueh cake ($14 a box). simple but definitely difficult to do to achieve such balanced taste and texture. to heightened muted cake taste, remember to have it with the sesame seeds, fried onion shallots and the kick-ass chili by the side. they make the best kueh dadars btw. anyway, for dainty, light and very well balanced taste kuehs, always trust trust galicier. no wrong.

happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to have coffee.
