SG Cheap & Good Eats ($10 & Below / Pax)
Finally checked this yong tau foo place off my makan list! We ordered the dry ($5 portion) and soup ($7 portion) version each. The ingredients in each bowl are quite standard but very fresh - fishballs, stuffed beancurd skin (tau kee), tau kwa and tofu, paired with thin bee hoon. The soup was light but flavourful, and I loved the sweet sauce that went so well with everything too! It's a great tasting bowl of comfort food that I wouldn’t mind having again if I’m in the area!
Revisited this Wanton Mee stall again (after 8 years!); they only open late at night (10.30pm - 3am) and the waiting time is always really long! Love the QQ texture of the noodles, and the fragrant sauce - it has that old school taste! The wanton mee also comes with char siew, mushrooms, shredded chicken and soup with wantons inside. It is a good plate of wanton mee and I understand why they have their fans, but I personally find that it is not worth the long waiting time. TBH, I can find other wanton mee of similar standards with shorter waiting times elsewhere.
We had the laksa here on the last day of 2021! The Signature Laksa is served in a claypot, which helps in keeping the laksa gravy piping hot! The gravy-like broth was rich and very lemak - just as I expected! It also comes with ingredients like prawns, a hard boiled egg, cockles, taupok, fish cakes and bean sprouts. Overall, it's not bad! I'll definitely return to have it again if I'm in the area.
My cravings for nasi padang were greatly satisfied at Coba Coba! Each dish you see on this plate was superb on their own - from the flavourful beef rendang, to the lemak sambal goreng, to the soft & savoury bergedil and the spicy & shiok sambal belacan. They all worked so well with rice! Will definitely be back again!
It’s been 3 years since I last had the wanton mee here, and I’m glad to report that it’s still as good as ever! The price for a regular plate of wanton mee is now $6 ($1 increase from 3 years ago), but this is reasonable. The two stars of the show are the egg noodles that have a springy texture, and the char siew that’s fatty and well charred! The wantons are quite plump too!
Mention Yishun and one of the first food places that come to my mind is this famous Laksa stall! Paid a visit again recently, and I’m glad to report that the standard is still gold! Rich and aromatic laksa gravy cover a generous amount of ingredients; it’s super shiok la!
Did not get a chance to try this in Japan when I was on holiday there, but the Gyudon here at their Suntec outlet was yummy! Generous portion of fatty beef slices that were tender and flavourful, sat on a bed of piping hot rice. Comfort in a bowl indeed! I do recommend topping up $2 for the Green Veggies combo as the sauteed kang kong is so garlicky and shiok! For the combo, you also get to choose either a drink or miso soup. Lastly, there is no GST or service charge here too!
Been a fan of Xin Mei Xiang’s Lor Mee ever since I first had it at their main outlet at Old Airport Road Food Centre, and I’m happy to report that the standard of their Lor Mee at this outlet is equally good! Plus this outlet opens till dinner time, and is fully air-conditioned too!
The Lor Mee here comes in 2 sizes (normal - $6 & large - $8), and each bowl comes with your choice of noodles (flat/round yellow noodle, kway teow or beehoon), fried fish chunks, braised pork belly, braised egg and generous topping of condiments (garlic, vinegar & chilli). Love the thick & gooey gravy that is really well-balanced in terms of taste, and the condiments certainly adds a new depth of flavour to the gravy too! I don’t usually finish the gravy when I have lor mee, but I did with this bowl! The fried fish chunks are a delight too, so fresh and goes really well with the umami gravy!
I still remember wondering what the hype was all about surrounding Chef Kin HK Wanton Noodle (helmed by an ex-Crystal Jade chef), when they first opened in September at Yishun and people were standing in line for two hours to try their Wanton Noodles! 🙀
We tried their offerings recently at their newly opened outlet at Blk 59 New Upper Changi Road (where there was still a significant queue even after lunch hours), and while I won’t say that this is worth queuing 2 hours for, the standard of their food is certainly there!
We had their HK Wanton Noodle (Dry), HK Braised Beef Brisket Noodle (Dry) and HK Dumpling Soup. The noodles were excellent and very springy, and so delicious when tossed together with the savoury sauces! The Beef Brisket Noodles (beef was very tender) was my favourite out of the two plates! We enjoyed the HK Dumpling Soup too, which had plump dumplings generously filled with ingredients! Their chilli was a hit with us too; we liked that it was fiery and had lots of dried shrimp bits.
A third outlet will be opening at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 on 14 December 2021, so good news for wanton mee lovers residing there!
Checked out this stall last weekend for their Green Chilli Chicken Rice, which I throughly enjoyed! The chicken thigh is deep fried only upon ordering, and then topped with their signature green chilli. The set comes with white rice, curry vegetables and a side of sambal chilli! The chicken thigh itself was so delish - crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, while the green chilli is very fragrant and also super spicy (seriously no joke)! It’s so shiok and I’ll definitely be back again! The stall also sells other dishes like Nasi Ayam Panggang and interestingly, Prawn Mee too.
There’s just something about this stall’s wanton mee (located at Hougang 401 KPT coffeeshop) that keeps me coming back for more! The combination of the springy noodles mixed with the sauce mix brings out a nostalgic old school taste that is just so appealing! They are open till late too, which makes it a good supper option!
Glad to discover Heng Heng Hong Kong Roasted Delight, a Hong Kong style roast meats stall in a coffeeshop, within walking distance from NEX Shopping Mall. The Roast Duck is well-seasoned, flavourful and not gamey, while the Char Siew is nicely caramelised and has a good fats to meat ratio! The Roast Pork pales slightly in comparison compared to those two, but is still a decent option nonetheless. I would also suggest pairing the meats with the springy noodles rather than the standard white rice. Definitely an underrated gem in the Serangoon area!
