Hawker Fares
The sign reads "BEWARE of super HOT Chili" and you better believe it. A few drops of the potent chili is enough to burn your tongue. Forget about the Sabx2 or Pontian wanton noodles, this is the real deal. In my opinion, one of the best in the business.
Good soup base and many many "liao", good for supper!
What better to have for supper after enjoying the CNY festivities at Chinatown than a good, steaming bowl of Cantonese-styled congee at Maxwell Market? Super generous with the pork slices (they throw in chunks of century egg and minced pork as well), the congee itself is also silky smooth. While you are at Maxwell, get some BBQ grilled wings from a stall near Hoe Kee as well. Super yummy! (Not forgetting herbal tea to counter the late nights 😅)
Thoroughly enjoyed the Hokkien mee here - slippery noodles slicked in flavourful stock and studded with prawns, squid and crispy bits of lard plus a dollop of chilli to seal the deal ($4 for small). The carrot cake was forgettable though; I recommend giving it a miss.
Was just talking to some #burppletastemakers last night about this Claypot Mee Tai Mak ($10 portion) and here I am today to enjoy it again. This is like a cauldron of goodness and raw eggs are added into the bubblin' hot mixture before serving to create a thickening consistency. Stir it well and it's ready to feast.
Absolutely hands down the best steamed fish we've ever had, at very reasonable prices. Sweet, firm and succulent fish meat cooked beautifully and complemented with fresh ingredients. Opens daily (except Wed) 7am to 3pm.
No queue at 645pm on Tuesday! $10 ba chor mee with minced pork, liver, meat ball, wonton and lard 🙊
Thrilled to have finally sampled this elusive hawker delight. The warmth of the claypot keeps the noodles and spicy broth just below scalding temperature so that every bite from the first to the last, imparts to the tastebuds a consistent degree of ambrosial pleasure.
So although it wasn't teeming with the rich hae bee (dried shrimp) flavour of my favourite 328 Katong Laksa – this isn't meant to be Katong laksa, anyway – I found the gravy simply irresistible and slurped down every last drop.
Our favourite stall, "Teddy Bear BBQ Chicken Wings" was closed when we were there on a Wednesday night, so we ended up ordering from Chong Pang Huat (#01-18) instead. Their chicken wings looked good but failed the taste test. There wasn't much flavour in the meat to begin with and we detected a strange stale smell (perhaps they were frozen for too long?). I doubt we will be ordering from them again.
Better than the first time I tried this outlet, with the egg noodles nicely al dente and tasty with lots of chili sauce. The char siew and wantons, though, were disappointing.
