Burger Kings
All hail to the new burger king of the East baby. Newly opened Burger Frites is the brainchild of the owner of Joo Chiat steakhouse staple Braseiro(in fact, it’s right across the road).
The patties may be from Huber’s and the brioche buns, Maison Kayser, but this beast is more than the sum of its parts. Each 180g Angus beef patty is flame-grilled to mouthwatering perfection, simply accessorised with a slice of melted cheese, pickles, lettuce and ketchup and put between pillowy toasted buns. The ratio of filling to bread is spot on, as is the flavourful and juicy patty that strikes the right balance between hefty density and melt-in-your-mouth crumbliness.
We didn’t expect THIS MUCH fries, but the hand-cut, skin-on, twice-fried potatoes were so good we cleaned them out.

With the exception of their amazing bread, my experiences at Firebake have been pretty uneven. Thankfully this bad boy delivers on all fronts. The hefty Australian Wagyu patty is flavourful and succulent, boasting beautiful char and sear on the outside and smothered in a beefy tomato relish, a cascade of melty cheese and pickles between fluffy sourdough potato buns.

Good value for what it is, the Classic features a loosely packed, flavoursome beef patty sandwiched between pillowy, warm buns stamped with Burg’s signature logo(Add on an egg for saucy satisfaction). Their use of pickled green chilli and fried shallots adds a local flavour to the burger that not only enhances its taste but also makes their burgers stand out from the crowd.

With an aggressive marketing strategy and partnerships with multiple restaurants in Singapore, it’s been pretty hard to ignore Impossible Foods’ plant-based meat alternative products. I must admit I was skeptical, but Three Buns’ Impossible burger offerings completely blew my expectations out of the water. From the taste, texture to mouthfeel, and especially the bloody medium-rare interior, the charred patty was oozing flavour and I wouldn’t have believed it wasn’t meat if I hadn’t known beforehand. In fact, we preferred it to the beef burger also served that night. Impossible Foods has got my vote.

Not bad, but there are more bang for your buck and better items on the menu to waste your calories or dollars on these forgettable sliders.

Only available till the end of February before it gets rotated out for a new burger of the month, get your hands on this towering bad boy laden with crisp jumbo onion rings, charred pastrami, melty Swiss cheese and a juicy medium-rare beef patty ybefore it’s gone!

The best-selling Number 1 is a concentrated flavour bomb of caramelized onions and the double cheese deliciousness of creamy crescenza as well as potent gorgonzola melted over a thicc patty, sandwiched between fluffy buns with thousand island sauce oozing out its edges. A most delightful hot mess.

I like the basics when it comes to burgers. And while I expected more from Black Tap’s, their Old Fashioned still satisfies. Classic toppings such as crimini mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and caramelised onions adorn a prime beef patty between slightly lacklustre buns. The rich and punchy horseradish sauce went a ways to livening up the eventually monotonous flavours of the burger.

The burger quest continues. Iconic Hollywood burger stand Fatburger has opened not one, but 2 outlets in Singapore at Kinex and Velocity@Novena Square. Their patties are chilled, never frozen, made from a ratio of 80% lean meat to 20% fat and cooked to order, ensuring you only get the freshest every single time. Big up those who can conquer the Quad Burger, stacked with 4 patties and all the trimmings. Conquer this behemoth and you’ll receive a certificate as well as earn a rightful place on the wall of fame!

At celebrity endorsed Hollywood burger joint Fatburger, you can customise your burger the way you like it. Choose your buns from brioche, whole meal or even gluten-free. Then pimp it up with $1 add-ons such as beef bacon, chilli and cheese. And because I’m an eggslut, the obvious choice was to top up with an oozy fried egg to sauce up my onion ring and bacon stuffed burger.

Nothing like a little American-style decadence to get the arteries pumping in excitement. 150g black angus beef patty, bbq ketchup, dingley dell black beer & treacle streaky bacon, bawang goreng, smoked cheese and smokey mayo in a toasted brioche bun, gushing fatty flavour by the mouthful. Would inhale this again.

One of my favourite burgers at the newly opened Three Buns at Robertson Quay, chiefly because of the sweet and sour acidity of home-made watermelon rind relish which cuts right through the richness of the meaty patties, onion puree, Three Islands Mayo and melted cheese. Chef Adam Penney from London’s iconic burger joint Lonsdale is at the helm of Potato Head’s Three Buns new stand-alone location, and this burger is a nostalgic throwback to his childhood.
