Cafes (Waffles and/or Honey Toast with Ice Cream Edition)
Prices are at $12.90 for this dessert.
The Shibuya Toast is easily addictive in terms of looks! The toast is toasted to perfection, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and served with another scoop of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. The toast was crusty and hinted with butter but as the flavour of the ice cream was normal at best.
At a quiet corner of a newly opened mixed development at Buona Vista is a Korean-themed cafe that sells Korean-made clothes and caps in addition to selling coffee, drinks, ice cream and other small bites! The Waffles with Thai Milk Tea ice cream ($8) is one on the menu that will appeal to the customers. The waffle was slightly crisp on the edges and soft on the inside, despite the batter tasting rather weak. The Thai Milk Tea ice cream had a strong flavour of the well-liked beverage but melted quite easily.
Landing into the heartlands is a Thai dessert kiosk that sells ice cream of a tropical fruit - coconut! The Thai Coconut Ice Cream ($4.90) here comes with 3 toppings of your choice which you can add a small amount more for premium toppings (chosen Peanuts, Sweetcorn & Atap Seeds). The coconut meat was very fresh and also smoothly cut out and the coconut ice cream tasted really strong! It comes with a cup of coconut water too so that you can quench your thirst and have more plain water at the same time!
With the area around Bukit Merah sprawling up with bakeries and other cafes, it is only recently that a new ice cream parlour has opened up here, serving up handmade ice creams and waffles! The Waffle with Speculoos & Bailey's ($13; $7.80 for 2 scoops, +$3.60 for waffles and +$0.80 each for premium flavours) may be priced on the higher end, but it is definitely one of the better ice creams around! The waffles are served in 4 quart-lets and are crisp on the outside and moist on the inside! The ice creams are not very easy to melt, with the Speculoos tasting strong of the familiar coffee biscuit and the Bailey's tasting sweet and creamy with a slight vanilla and alcoholic taste!
Finally one ice cream parlour that's nearer to home! The Waffles with Red Velvet Cheesecake and Pistachio ($10.20; $3.60 for waffle, $5.60 for 2 scoops & +$0.50 each for premium scoop) was a good combination! Waffles was rather disappointing as it tasted rather floury and similar to old-school confectionery waffles except being slightly more plain. This was salvaged by the ice cream which didn't melt as easily! The Red Velvet Cheesecake had a strong taste of the original cake variant while the Pistachio's flavour was really intense!
One of their premium flavour, this Thai Coconut Ice Cream ($5.80) is also one of their bestsellers, being proclaimed as the Best Thai Coconut Ice Cream, which stands out quite true as the taste of the coconut is really intense in this one and it also comes with real coconut bits!
This Kopi Addict Waffle ($16+) is a locally-infused rendition of your normal waffles, as the combination of a coffee waffle, candied bacon, a scoop of butterscotch gelato presents a balanced taste between sweet and savoury! The coffee taste is enhanced by the waffle itself and the coffee-infused maple syrup! The candied bacon, though dry, is sweet and savoury.
A new concept of waffle is being made here at Hvala Waffle Bar, where waffles come in long sizes that are cut into pieces or on a stick! The Tiramisu and Strawberry Balsamico ($3.80 each) are 2 of the 8 flavoured waffles that they have! The Tiramisu tasted creamy with a slight coffee taste due to the tiramisu cream used and is chocolatey! The Strawberry Balsamico on the other hand, is creamy and sour at the same time because balsamic vinegar is added on top of the cream!
A new ice cream joint has opened within Lorong Ah Soo that has interesting ice cream flavours, such as Yakult Cookies (a combination between Cookies n Cream and Yakult) and Poach Pear. This Waffles with Yakult Cookie and Poach Pear ($9.50) gives the combination between sweet and sour as the Yakult Cookie provides a sourish taste to the Cookies n' Cream while the Poach Pear provides an additional sweetness to the pear flavor.
33SixtyEight does ice creams, but what is significant here is they do ice cream pairings here too. The Double Puff Power comes with 2 scoops of ice cream ($6), which The More We Get Together (Crunchy Caramel Biscuits) (+$0.50 for premium flavor) and Green Citizenship (Pistachio from Italy) (+$0.50 for premium flavor) are chosen. The Crunchy Caramel Biscuits had a subtle taste to it while bring crunchy at certain bites to it because of the biscuits. The Pistachio tasted rich in pistachio, but also tasted rich in almond.
Replacing the shop space previously occupied by OZ Specialty Coffee, newly opened Les Patisseries outlet Maison De The currently get their bakes from Les Patisseries and offer mains and desserts similar to them as well. The Waffles with Salted Caramel ice cream and Chocolate macaron ($9.90) may not be as satisfying due to the waffles being doughy despite being crisp on the outside. The Salted Caramel ice cream and the Chocolate macaron are good though.
The Salted Caramel and Strawberry Cheesecake ($5.80) melts less faster than the other 2 ice creams. The Salted Caramel tasted more saltish than sweet, and the Strawberry Cheesecake tasted strongly of cheesecake!
