Had Ri Ri Cha’s Nian Gao Waffles a while back and I still remember how pleasantly surprised I was by it! I like waffles with more of a bite, and they nailed the texture on theirs: crisp on the outside especially on its edges, and fluffy inside without being too airy. The soft and slightly chewy nian gao layer in the middle was of just the right ratio too!

The ice cream flavour we chose was a no for us though. The Roselle Smoked Plum had a grainy texture and the balance of sweetness and sourness really didn’t work for us. Will be back for the waffle and other ice cream flavours instead!

All them Korean mochi donuts from DONAS 8, newly found at Market Blue in Tanglin Mall! These are Korean chapssal donuts (sweet glutinous rice donuts) that come in either a cream cheese or red bean filling, with flavours such as original, injeolmi, matcha, cocoa, strawberry, etc.

A pity we didn’t get to dig into them right away, so that affected the texture quite hugely. Think they would do much better if you have them freshly hot - we learnt after that from the team that the tip is to freeze them when you’re home, and air fry them at 180 degrees for 5 mins when you’re ready to have them.

FLUFFY SOFT KAKIGORI. Sakanoue Cafe that’s based in Tokyo, is here at Isetan Scotts’ supermarket for a pop-up! They’re serving their range of kakigori in various flavours on rotation - think flavours like Matcha, Blue Cheese & Sweet Bean, Pistachio Raspberries and more.

Yay, we went by early yesterday to try this and loved it. The carefully packed ice was super fluffy soft, all paired with sweet strawberry syrup, milk syrup, fresh cream espuma and bits of freeze-dried strawberries that I wished there was more of, considering the price tag.

A very pleasantly light piece that has an almond dacquoise base, with layers of nutty pistachio praline, tangy sweet strawberry crémeux and rhubarb compote, plus valrhona opalys bavarois. Was specially created for Christmas!

Pear compote, vanilla, white chocolate and amaretto on a base of hazelnut chocolate sponge and chocolate sablé. I personally would have liked a more distinct pear sweetness to come through, as the chocolate elements seem to take centre stage here.

Visited Museum of Ice Cream a bit back for PINKMAS, their Christmas special, where the rooms were decorated in Christmas decor! There were different ice cream flavours at the various stops and each stop had them in different forms - like in cones, cups, with wafer, etc. The flavours were more misses than hits for us unfortunately.

How cute is this Christmas cake from LUNA! It’s adorably shaped like a whole row of Christmas trees, featuring an almond sponge crispy feuilletine base, with 3 distinct layers that complemented each other very nicely - dark chocolate mousse, sweet caramel milk chocolate mousse and yogurt & cream cheese white chocolate. Liked that this wasn’t too sweet, a good option for all the upcoming Christmas gatherings!

Not a fan of their tart crust unfortunately, we thought it could be a lot more firm, crisp and consistent in its texture. They do have interesting flavours like Speculoos Hojicha, Wild Berry Lavendar & Honey Chrysantemum. Our personal preference among these was the Matcha Latte, that albeit a bit sweet, had quite nice intense matcha notes.

Have been noticing that coconut seems to be a popular flavour for Christmas cakes this year! Sheraton Towers’ Ivory Delight Log Cake features the same, with soft and fragrant pandan sponge layered with yam paste and coconut mousse. Enjoyed this! It was mildly sweetened, tasty, and serves as a light dessert option that’s good to pair with your Christmas roast meats and feasts.

They’re both big on gluten free and healthier options, with Curated Culture’s probiotic teas & Guilt Free Food Sg’s bakes. Their Christmas collab features each box with 2 teas and a choice of bake - a pair of Mochi Muffins or Vegan Chocolate Cookies which aims to satisfy the sweet tooth cravings with reduced sugar in the recipes (actual taste was sweeter than I expected!). The mildly sweet and lightly fizzy probiotic teas are all natural with no extra bad stuff added in, only lots of probiotics that’s good for your gut! Their green teas and black teas are tasty.

Had @dilutedcoke the first time a long while back and really enjoyed her bakes!! Happy to hear that she’s having a popup at Baker X in Orchard Central, till 13 November.

Got to try some of the items from her Baker X menu, but she has more items available and will be changing up her menu mid-way. Here’s her Pistachio Tart, Matcha Yuzu Salted Caramel Tart, Black Sesame & Yuzu Sando, Earl Grey Pecan Sando! Always love that while her bakes are lightly sweetened, flavours are not compromised. It’s difficult to pick a favourite, but I was most surprised by the Earl Grey Pecan Sando - by how nicely the maple pecan paste when with the earl grey, even though I’m not usually a fan of this tea. Her tarts have such a lovely buttery tart crust!
