You could never go wrong with some oriental cuisine. Here are some dishes that have stood out amongst the many.

Another great lunch option at CBD! These pork stomach potato noodles from Qin Ji Rougamou were sooo good - spicy, sour and very savoury; everything you would want from a bowl of Chinese noodles. Their liang pi was also pretty good. Everything is pretty affordable as well, being around $10 per portion (or less).

A little gem tucked away in the corner of Fortune Centre — A9 Noodles serves up cheap and comforting Chinese noodles and dumplings. 15 dumplings go for a steal at $4(!) while a bowl of noodles go for $4-5. Pictured is the pork meatball noodles which was super hearty and refreshing. The pork meatballs were also really substantial and meaty (and not doughy/flour-y like the processed ones). The mala noodles were also really savoury and good too!

At $2.50 per pop, these scallops are not the cheapest item on the menu but are pretty worth it if you ask me. Each scallop is topped generously with spring onion, chilli and garlic, ensuring that each bite is super satisfying and full of flavour. It is surprisingly not too spicy despite how red it looks, and the chilli is there more for flavour.

Plain tofu topped with a pretty generous amount of century egg and a lift soy sauce. This was kind of a let down, and while it was not bad, it wasn’t particularly great either. The portion is quite generous for $8, and is quite light which helps balance out the other heavy items.

Personally am a fan of pigs intestines so I was pretty excited to try this. However, we were slightly let down as the pig intestines had a pretty strong smell which could put many people off and made it hard to stomach. Flavour-wise, the mala spice and crispy batter was pretty good, although it all became overpowered by the strong smell of the intestines. This may be a hit and miss, since a friend who had eaten this before at this place said that it did not have such a strong odour the previous time.

For real, authentic, Chinese cuisine, Good Come Again (好再来) has a pretty wide variety of dishes to choose from. Some of the flavours and foods may be a bit more intense or ‘out there’ for our Singaporean taste buds, but their skewers are a good place to start! From the safer choices and mutton, bacon and mushroom, and squid, to more ‘exotic’ choices and pig stomach and chicken hearts, there’s bound to be something for everyone. The skewers are all coated in a similar marinade, so it really boils down to which kinds of meat you prefer. The mutton and bacon with mushroom were really good! Especially the mutton, which didn’t have a strong gamey smell. Their other big main dishes weren’t particularly spectacular, so I would stick to the skewers next time.

Always a safe option that can never go wrong. There's nothing more comforting than a hot bowl of porridge served with small plates of food Teochew style. The prawn-paste chicken was not bad, although it was probably sitting there for a while as it was a tad cold and not that crispy. Their omelette was good, soft, and still warm. For this many dishes and 3 bowls of porridge, it cost us $15 which is so much more affordable than all the cafe food. This was at the branch at Tanjong Katong, although there's another at Upper Serangoon Road as well. Perfect for supper!

Something a little different from the usual "dark" lor mee that's more common. It's quite similar to hokkien mee, but still distinctively lor mee-like with the addition of vinegar (which you can add more if you like). A lot of ingredients are given, like prawns, clams, pork slices, and squid. For two people, the $8 portion would be more substantial, although the $5 portion is recommended if you want more variety to try more of their other side dishes.

Surprisingly it was pretty good! Despite all the recent reviews about how quality has dropped etc etc, I thought that the dim sum was really not too bad. The fried mee sua cake was quite unique, and different from your har gao siew mai staples that we are all used to. It was a little too heavy though, as it was literally like fried carrot cake but mee sua instead. The hor fun was one of the better ones. It wasn't too salty, and the sauce was really eggy. Their liu sha bao had a nice custard, not too runny or oily.

Hearty, comforting and super yummy. The dish was chock-full of ingredients, like fish slices, prawns, squid, tofu, and mushrooms. The gravy is so rich and flavourful that you can probably just drink it as soup on its own with all the other ingredients inside. However, this was a little too salty for my liking.

Unlike your usual oyster omelettes, this one is done Teochew style whereby it's drenched in gravy topped with a generous portion of fresh, big oysters. Those who are not a fan of oysters will probably not be able to take the fishiness of the dish. Otherwise, the omelette is soft and fluffy while the oysters are really fresh. The addition of gravy makes you feel less guilty for eating this as opposed to the other variant which is drenched in oil instead.

Served as a fried pancake, you won't be able to tell that it's made of kway teow. The noodles are fried till it is crispy, and is then formed into a gigantic pancake which is then cut into tiny squares for everyone's enjoyment. This is super addictive, and is ultimately a plate of fried carbs made savoury due to the cai poh. A must-have at this place.
