Curry Rice
This curry rice at Maxwell hails a long and never ending line. The uncle dishes out the servings really quickly, but not fast enough to beat the line 😂. The star dish here is really the fried pork chop. Crunchy, perfectly battered and tender, this pork chop is one of the better ones I've had in Singapore. A portion with 1 protein and 2 vegetables costs $3.40.
This place is such a hidden gem. Located on Stanley Street, Shree Ganga is a humble shop that boasts a crazy long queue.
This Masala Dosai with added vegetables ($4.80+ $1.50) was seriously a treat. Crispy thin dosai, smeared (on the inside) with malasa sauce and hidden potato bits, the dish itself was already pretty flavourful. But I really couldn't resist dumping more of the green sauce ( i think it's coriander) onto the dosai for it gave a subtle fragrance that instantly level up the whole dosai. And that mixed fries vegetables is also super yummy, though unhealthy 😂.
Definitely coming again!!!
Nothing as comforting as a saucy plate of mixed curry rice at 9pm. We came here as it was one of the few supper places open till late and it was quite easy on the pocket.
However, we were slightly disappointed to see an empty food cabinet, with only ngoh hiang, egg and cabbage. Left with no choice, we ordered the 3 ingredients and the bill came up to be $3.40/plate. Possibly a blessing in disguise, the ngoh hiang came out to be the star of the plate, with a think skin, mouthfuls of crunchy chestnut and a umami minced pork filling. The egg was also perfectly fried to the crisp and I really like a soft mushy scoop of plain cabbage.
When we were about to go, we saw other people walking in with plates filled with pork chop 😱. Oh boy, I guess we were late but simply not late enough.
Pro tip: Either come for late supper or usual dinner, don't do a 9pm visit to avoid disappointment.
Tucked in a corner of the second floor of Hong Lim, the store takes a long queue. Expect a 15-30 minutes wait, while the owners furiously whips up a wicked plate. Curry chicken cutlet noodles ($4) has a mildly spicy and lightly creamy sauce, QQ noodles and a meaty, oily, super crusty cutlet I wished the dish wouldn't end, but the little healthy voice in head was glad it did.
Indulgent, with all the right reasons. Think - crispy thin pork chop, mushy stewed cabbage, blanched eggplant together with a huge scoop of Lemak curry. MORE PLEASE!!!!
Curry noodles with chicken cutlet ($4) was one of those things I didn't want to have, but ended up loving it. The watery curry was thin (appropriately so), but still packed with all the fragrance of curry spices. What's worth mentioning is the crispy chicken cutlet that is so damn juicy, I couldn't resist finishing the whole plate on my own! Over here, we added a fish cake for an additional $0.50.
Been a sick cat the last few days and all I'm craving for right now is a good bowl of curry meeeeeeee......
SHIOKKKK!!!!!! Never had high expectations for Curry Times; I don't know why but I just assumed that it only serves substandard food and I'm glad that this visit here proved me all wrong. This bowl of curry chicken hits all the right notes. With just the perfect amount of spices, the curry chicken was really fragrant, with a hint of nonya flavour. The chicken was really succulent and tender too.
"Very cheap and nice!", the taxi driver said about this place. If there's one thing I've learnt, it's that the true hawker foodies in Singapore are taxi drivers and indeed, the curry rice didn't fail us. Generous servings of curry and ingredients at a ridiculously low price. I ordered a vegetable and two meat side dishes at only $3.60. The selection of side dishes would appeal to the more carnivorous crowd as the store offers a wider selection of meaty sides. Curry rice always makes a very hearty meal (:
Shiok shiok shiok. The cabbage was so soft and juicy, perfect complement with the curry rice. Luncheon meat so crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, not too salty and not at all oily- such perfection! And the tofu.... I don't even know how it has wok hei on it, but it's just soooo delish. Deceivingly simple, but oh so damn delicious.
