Hawker Adventure
Happiness can come in the form of scoring a bowl of fish soup from Maxwell without having to queue!
To have this bowl of fish soup during normal work hours is no easy task. While doing my internship along Neil Road, I remember having to take the special effort to leave for early lunch and (still!) queue for a good 30 minutes before being rewarded with a bowl. Had I left office later, the wait could be as long as an hour.
My ex-colleagues once asked me for the reason for braving the long queues to have this steaming hot bowl of soup, in the middle of a ill-ventilated hawker centre. And the answer is a no brainer. Silky thick bee hoon immersed in a sweet milky fish broth, topped with a generous portion of thick fish slices. The fish slices here are so fresh, you can feel it in the texture of the meat. Also, fish soup is one of my favourite comfort food and this one from Maxwell is always a 'must have' for me, whenever I pop by. #hawkerpedia
Damn good teabreak snacks from Chef Hong HK bakery! β’ One of my new L πve β’
Really interesting to eat this style! Must I must say it's rather overpriced... $2 for one roll (had one mushroom and one char sew) and $3 for the otah one. But it's still good on the taste buds, smooth and soft, and the gravy is light! Good to give this store a try... But Mayb not too oftenπ
Our lunch the other day. I love zinc!!!I mean oysters...And then curry chicken wrap for snack from Brawn & Brains after this. ππ #Flatlay #Hawker #HappyMonday #Lunch #YourSingaporeFood #JiakHiddenGems #Jiaklocal #Burpple #Egg #Oysters
Put any diet/eat-clean plans on pause, and triumphantly declare Friday as cheat day β just so you can celebrate with a plate of scissors cut curry rice. Come here with a carefree spirit, and choose your ingredients with reckless abandon. Pile your plate high with classics β from pork chops to braised cabbage, ngoh hiang to tau pok. This meal is cheap, darn good, and super satisfying. Set along the character-filled Jalan Besar, grab a roadside seat for the full experience. Don't hang around for too long though, there's probably a queue of people waiting for your seat. Go on, it's time for a beer.
This Claypot Mee Tai Mak may not be pretty, but it's darn tasty, and at only $8 for extreme comfort, it's everything you need after a long week. The plump little noodles lie in a sea of thick, bubbling, flavourful broth topped with a freshly-cracked egg. It is made complete with lovely bits of chopped vegetables, minced meat, and prawns. Be sure to ask for chilli padi to mix in! If you're coming in a large group, get a big portion to share, along with other dishes like Coffee/Salted Egg Pork Ribs and Boss Bee Hoon. As its name suggests, this place also does a mean, traditional Fish Head Steamboat β the perfect dish to share with family on a cool night. Pro tip: simply reserve a table and pre-order dishes so you don't have to wait!
You shouldn't have to make the agonising decision between a red bean or peanut pancake if you love them both. At just 90 cents, you can get a mix of both red bean and peanut for the ultimate pancake here! There is almost always a queue for these soft, pillowy parcels, but you can pre-order a box for a mid-day treat for you and your colleagues.
Trust the perpetual snaking queue at Xin Mei Xiang; a favourite among many. The rich, intense prawn-based gravy is just viscous enough to pleasantly coat the noodles without being cloying - add black vinegar to bring it to another level. The noodles are topped with the standard braised pork, ngoh hiang, egg and beansprouts, they also include fried snapper flakes that lend a great texture. The key here is patience, you'll get to the front of the queue eventually.

Fortune Food just nails it every time with their consistency β a good balance of sweet and spicy, and the all-important crunchiness from toasted peanuts and crispy dough bits. And what's the point of going to Chinatown at night if I don't get beer? Smith Street Taps was closed, but the cheap swigs at On Tap aren't shabby too.
Tried this special style of dish? Deep fried Ee mian with slice fish in black sauce. Crispy thin version of Ee Mian which totally soak in the essence of the sweet yet brings about a little saltish black sauce. Paired with slices of fish with the skin being a little too chewy though. Quite a creative and delightful dish nonetheless.
BEST SOON KUAY IN SG! love the sweet fillings and the perfect firm yet chewy skin!! $2.20 for 3 if i'm not wrong!
