During this trip, we ate a lot, and I mean A LOT. But perhaps, we might have just left the best for the last. It was on our final day in London before we have to catch the flight back, but us being gung-ho, decided to queue up for the opening of Cakes & Bubbles, which is Albert Adrià’s first foray into the London’s F&B scene. If you are not familiar with Albert Adrià, he’s the brother of Ferran Adrià and both of them were the driving forces behind the legendary Michelin three-star Restaurant, elBulli. Both brothers have created a gastronomic revolution and the restaurant will be forever remembered as the gold standard. After elBulli, Albert is now the owner of a culinary empire, including the hottest tapas restaurant in Barcelona, Tickets, in which the restaurant was awarded a Michelin Star and inducted in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Albert himself was even crowned The World’s Best Pastry Chef by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and there is just no way we could have missed the opening of Cakes & Bubbles.

On opening day, the queue was massively long and it took us almost an hour before we got to the front. As it was the launch, the restaurant was giving away a limited quantity of their famed signature dessert, The Cheese Cake, which fortunately for us, we were able to get one each. The description of this cheese cake was pretty interesting and it reads “for the adventurous: A new concept of the cheesecake, with coulommiers cheese, hazelnut and white chocolate” and at £12, it was by no means affordable. However, the price tag was clearly justified as each bite just brought an even higher euphoria. It has got to be one of the most memorable desserts that I’ve had in recent times and I highly recommend everyone to go get it when in London.

We didn’t specifically wanna have ramen (as we are both not huge ramen fans) or have this in our plans but the menu was enticing enough for us to step into the restaurant. Got for myself a bowl of the Dracula Tonkotsu (£12.90) and as the name suggests, it comes loaded with caramelized black garlic mayu and garlic chips, a pimped up version of their signature ramen. At the end of it, your breathe will smell of garlic that you will scare off the nearest vampires.

Since my hotel is located very near to this restaurant, we instantly made a reservation the day we reached London. We went the following day, had dinner and left belly-satisfied. This place and especially the highly rated Special Roast Duck Cantonese Style (Half, £15.80) was truly a gold mine. The roasted skin with a bit of fats underneath, the tender duck meat and the natural juices from the duck and marinate was crying out for a bowl of rice to go with it.

Using only ingredients that’s locally sourced, all the food is freshly prepared and cooked upon order in order to let the produce shine through. A dish such as Banana and Ricotta Pancakes (£9.60), served with maple syrup, might seem simple and pretty generic, but at the hands of the chefs in Muriel’s Kitchen, it turned out pretty damn well.

Located near Monmouth Coffee, you should be able to spot Le Marché Du Quartier and thanks to the recommendation by @migrationology, the Duck Confit Sandwich (£6) has got to be one of the tastiest things we ate in London. The varying textures of the pulled duck confit where you get some crispy strands and some chewy ones is such an interesting combination with the caramelized sweet onion chutney and fresh green salad. A flavour bomb from each bite, we wiped out the whole roll within seconds.

After approximately waiting in the rain and cold for 30 minute, we were rewarded with a table and immediately ordered the first three pastas in the menu. Starting with the Tagliarini (£5), this are thin strands of pasta similar to a flattened spaghetti that is cooked in dry chili, garlic and finished with a generous serving of pangrattato breadcrumbs. This was followed by the Stracci (£5.50) in a sweet onion, thyme and gorgonzola fonduta sauce, before another plate of Gnocchi (£4) that’s infused in nutmeg butter. All the plates comes in a sizeable portion that’s value-for-money and not only that, you are getting fresh pasta made to order.

Having major withdrawal symptoms from my recent UK trip, especially the awesome burgers and fries from Five Guys! Everything was on point that we even went back twice throughout the trip. From the locally sourced potatoes to make their addictive hand cut fries cooked in 100% peanut oil to made-to-order cheeseburgers with a wide array of toppings of your choice. And not forgetting the Five Guys Shake (£5.25) where you get to choose any combination from 10 mix-ins and we chose the chocolate, cherry and Oreo cookies.

It was so good that I went back twice during my stay in the UK. Pictured is the Grilled Cheese Sandwich (£3.75) with added bacon. What I like about Five Guys is that you can literally customize your own burger with a million over combinations with the various free toppings from lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms to sauces such as ketchup, hot sauce and even bbq sauce. Just thinking about the loaded with ingredients and greasy burger is making my mouth water.

Perhaps it was fate or just impeccable timing as this show was aired when I was doing my research on places to eat around Camden market, which made my planning much easier. Though there was a slight drizzle when we were there, it didn’t stop us from having their signature Fettuccine Alfredo (£6.50). Pasta that’s freshly made from scratch always triumph pre-made ones and that’s what you’re gonna get here. Cooked in a creamy white wine sauce, the fettuccine is able to latch onto the sauce perfectly as you get a myriad of flavours from each slurp. The addition of Parmesan, garlic and chives rounds up this humble yet soul-comforting bowl of pasta.

Is it worth the money? You can be the judge when it opens in Singapore next year. To me, to pay more than 10 SGD for a cheeseburger in a fast food restaurant, I rather spend my money elsewhere. Even the highly rated ShackSauce in it is not able to justify the price tag. What you are probably paying are the premium ingredients such as the 100% natural Aberdeen Angus beef where the cows are grass-fed on UK and Irish pastures and the buns that are made by local bakers. However, I still don’t taste the difference.

The accompanying lettuce, pickles and generous dollop of buttermilk herb mayo cuts through the heaviness of the chicken, making it an enjoyable burger to have apart the regular beef ones.

Fortunately, this was just a small portion of not we would have wasted some calories (not that it has a lot to begin with). For anyone looking for a nutritious takeaway, this might be your answer but for us, this chicken vermicelli soup in some sort of coconut broth tasted weird and is a no-go.
