It amazing how every turn of the street in most parts of the city that you can find a bakery and each selling a totally different selection of bakes. For this bake, it’s a crossover between a bread and pretzel with a soft pillow texture and the chocolate provided the necessary sweetness while the nuts provide a contrasting bite. All in all, an excellent breakfast bread that goes so well with a cup of latte.

Yes, it is massively popular and has a legion of ardent fans. Yes, there is always a long queue in the restaurants and prices are not cheap. And so, curious about the hype, we decided to give Shake Shack a try before it comes to Singapore next year, which they will definitely be charging the same exorbitant prices for burger and fries. This is the famous Crinkle-Cut Cheese Fries which costs £4, equivalent to around SGD 7.50. Don’t get me wrong, this is yummy as the fries is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside while the cheese is gooey and well, “cheesy”. However, I don’t get the cost-to-value in this and a certain burger restaurant chain that has a number and gender in their name has much better fries in my opinion.

Using only single origin beans, they take pride in brewing a consistent and quality cup of coffee each time you visit any of their outlets. I must say that the coffee culture in the United Kingdom is much better than back home. Another thing that I’ve observed here is that the price of a coffee, be in hot or iced, is the same whereas it will be an additional 50 cents to a dollar elsewhere.

However, customer service can be much improved. The whole situation was that we went into the restaurant and as we were only 2 pax, we were ushered to a counter table as the side table is only for 3-4 pax (even though the restaurant was kinda empty at that time). Shortly after, a European couple came in and were given that bigger space with the side table. In addition, due to our counter seatings, we had no space to leave our jackets/bags (it was either we wear/carry them while eating or place them on the floor), so we put it on the empty chair beside us but was immediately told to take it away. I sense some bias in the service which we quickly ate our food and left the restaurant.

For an additional £3.50, you get a top up of smoked salmon which definitely up the ante for me. The flow of the egg yolk never fails to whet the appetite.

Nice? It’s not that bad. Worth it? Definitely no. Starting at £4.50 for the vegetarian daikon bao, this pictured is the most expensive fried chicken bao at £5.50. I definitely can get more bang for the buck with that quantity and amount paid.

And, I am glad to say that the consistency and quality have been maintained since. Being a person of habit, I tend to return to places or order dishes that have impressed me but this time round, I decided to try something different. Instead of the usual latte or flat white, I opted for their Cold Brew (£3), which in my opinion, is one of the better ones that I’ve tried so far. Using single origin coffee beans from Ozone Coffee Roasters and steeped for hours, the cold brew is easy on the palate, very clean tasting and has neither the acidic nor bitter flavour.

Not only do they source their own single origin beans from micro farms in the UK, they also do their own roasting in their premises. As such, you might get a different cup of coffee each time you’re there as each variant of beans has a limited supply. I cannot recall where the origins of my coffee was from but it was certainly a good cup that has a slight chocolatey flavour and a smooth mouthfeel.

This modern Asian interpretation of the Thai curry that is now prepared with duck confit, Thai basil and crispy rice, is an absolute joy to eat. A slight spiciness in this creamy curry with the crispy duck meat and rice provided a flavour bomb with differencing texture from each bite. The addition of the Thai basil gave it a refreshing lift to complement the other heavy flavours as well.

To balance the meal, I also ordered the Broccoli (£5.50) that is pan-fried with hazelnuts, anchovies, sage and lemon butter. When the vegetables are equally delicious as to the meats and seafoods, you know this is a restaurant that you have to visit at least once when in Glasgow.

However, our determination finally paid off as we managed to get a table during lunchtime a couple of days later and the wait was well worth it. The restaurant interior was designed to exude a relaxed and casual setting as you can see the chefs preparing the food via the open kitchen. In terms of the food offerings, Ox and Finch is a restaurant that contemporaries traditional staples, served in a tapas style format where you can order a few of these small plates to share among a group of people. Pictured is the Smoked Haddock (£7) served with boulangère potatoes in a mussel cream. The delicate texture of the fish with the crispy potatoes in the creamy sauce is like a party in your mouth as each ingredient plays a complementary role to each other.

Hence, there will always be pockets of time in the afternoon that I will slot in a coffee or two; to rest the tired feet and mind. One of my pit-stops in Glasgow brought me to Riverhill Coffee Bar, a cafe that serves an excellent cup of coffee and an even better Poached Pear & Chocolate Tart (£2.80). I have no idea how they managed to make the poached pear, almonds and chocolate go so well together but they actually did, with no flavours fighting with each other with the buttery tart. I highly recommend this place if you are ever traveling in Glasgow and try out their bakes.

The prices in U.K. are generally higher than what we would be paying back home but for this Breakfast Toasties made with homemade sourdough, this will only cost you £3 and you get either the banana, cinnamon & maple syrup or PBJ option, which we chose the former. Very hearty portions and flavours that will start your day sweetly. For the savory item, we got the Breakfast Roll with Carluke pork and leek sausage (£3.50).
