Journey Of The Chirashi Don 爱
This was my first chirashi don ever eaten! Genki sushi's chirashi don is cheap ($12.90 before gst and service charge) and average to eat. The sashimi is not horrible but I can't say it's very fresh either. It contains prawn sashimi which is not widely seen at other Japanese restaurants' chirashi don so if you're a fan of it, you will be a happy person here. Genki's triple salmon sushi remains the ultimate bomb so I will definitely go back for that! But not the chirashi don unless I'm already seated there and craving for one.
It's Sumiya! I guess by this time everyone must have already heard of this place. It's affordable ($20.80!), it has fresh chunky sashimi and sides like chawamushi, salad, small appetizers and even a dessert mochi! I posted a close up photo of the barachirashi don because there're enough overview photos of the spread out in the net, what people should see are the chunky pieces and huge ikura roe 😍. The last time I went, it used to serve avocado in the barachirashi don but I think it has been changed to cucumbers now. However, it's still worth a visit!!
This was quite an accidental find, I was heading to Hanare but it was closed that day so I stumbled upon Sushi Kou instead. And wow this chirashi don was much better than Hanare (tried it some days after and nope, wasn't that good)!! Sushi Kou's sashimi was fresh, there wasn't a queue (yay for fast service!) and the rice was delightful. Their choices of sashimi were different from other restaurants, besides the usual salmon and tuna, there were tako, scallops and some unknown fishes but all were so delicious! Free flow appetizer was given before the meal and even though it's just seaweed in some sour sauce, it was really appetizing and I couldn't stop eating them. The chirashi don came with a chawamushi as well and the total cost was 26$ before gst and service charge.
Senjyu is the imouto (little sister in jap) of Sakae. Tried their chirashi don during their promotion so it was only around $18 which was pretty cheap. Of course like what people usually say "you get what you pay for", it is really so. The sashimi weren't the freshest and they were cut very thinly so it was not satisfying to bite into. Secondly, the Japanese rice was not sweet and fragrant enough. To give them some good point, the chirashi don came with a few sides like salad, chawamushi, tempura and fruits which make the set really really worth the price. But it is still unlikely that I will go back again.
I love the chirashi Don in The Sushi Bar, their sashimi are the freshest I have ever tasted! It cost almost 30$ after gst and service charge but it was so worth it. There was so much sashimi that I got so sick of eating them after some time.. Which technically wasn't a good thing 😅. I would advise people to go on a very, very empty stomach because I had to really force the last three slices down. That was really the first time I had difficulties finishing up sashimi because I am a huge lover who's always wanting more sashimi! By the way, we also ordered an aburi roll which wasn't very nice so you can give that a miss (save stomach space!) and just go for their chirashi Don.
Hidden in purvis street, located just beside the famous Chin Chin coffee house is a non-appealing Japanese restaurant. It was so unattractive that I walked passed it a few times before realizing it. At that point of time, I was pretty doubtful about the authenticity of their chirashi don. I was wrong, because their chirashi don ($25) was one of the best chirashi dons I have ever tried. Their sashimi was fresh and tasted great! My favorite was their swordfish as their tuna 'fishy' smell was slightly too strong. I'm usually not a fan of hamachi but their hamachi had the right balance of 'fishyness' and sweetness. Really enjoyed their chirashi don over here without breaking my bank account.
