Family Meals

For bonding with your parents whom you haven't seen in a while or siblings whom you used to fight with a long time ago.

My parents discovered this place recently and have been returning for dinners ever since. Curious as to why they love it so much, I decided to join them one day for dinner. You may have already heard about their famous fish head curry and chicken curry—heaven on a plate when paired with briyani rice or even a simple thosai! On top of that, do not miss out on their fried lamb. Though I was a little skeptical at first (who orders fried lamb at a mamak restaurant, right?), my doubts were all cleared up upon first bite—tender meat jam packed with flavor. No rice/curry needed!

Formerly Roast & Grind, Classic Rebel brings you South American infused tapas made for sharing. Located in a quieter area of PJ, their dining environment is so cozy and well thought of - perfect for groups of families and friends (both indoor and outdoor seating available). Terribly missing their guacamole, a personal favorite, with a hint of spiciness to kick off those tastebuds! May have to order a second / third helping of corn chips in future.

Eggs done right, kaya toast, Hailam Mee and of course - kopi peng. This is as classic as it gets! Weekday mornings aren't too packed at the new relocated Yut Kee so don't worry too much about long waits.

How to order food at restaurants like this:

1. Get the attention of the person with a notepad (or sheets of paper clipped together, and pray that they speak English if you can't speak Mandarin or Cantonese to save your life) or he / she will come to you asking what you would like to order.
2. Pick a primary ingredient i.e. chicken, pork, a type of vegetable, fish, tofu, etc.
3. Ask them how they can cook it for you and they will throw a list of styles like sweet & sour, ham tan (salted egg), salted fish and garlic, and even Guinness.
4. Mention your preferred portion (usually either big or small, or cooked for a certain number of people).
5. Let them know how many plates of rice you'd like.
6. Order a large bottle of beer while you wait for your food and soak in the ambience of sitting outdoors in a town that is just in the midst of waking up as the sun sets.

No prices in sight but don't be afraid to ask for them. For 3 dishes, 1 plate of rice, iced Chinese tea and a large bottle of Tiger, this hearty after-work dinner came up to a total of RM62.90 for 3 people.

RM6.90 - RM17 for Loh Mee from Ulu Yam whether for individual stomachs or big families, have it here in SS2 on a rainy day, just a couple of doors away from Original Kayu Nasi Kandar around the corner. Not for those without an asbestos tongue, this piping hot bowl is way more tummy-warming than you think. Add vinegar at your own will and enjoy spotting little pieces of pork lard in your bowl ;)

Originated from Putian, a coastal suburb in Fujian, Putien has found a cosy spot in SS15 Courtyard. Though packed during peak hours (usually with families), I decided to take my parents there because they prefer Chinese food. Go for the Lor Mee (RM18.90) to share and Spinach Supreme (RM17.90) — your mom will love it for its comforting vibe. Skip the oyster omelette (might as well call it starchy omelette). Accompany your meal with hot tea as you continue to tell your parents about how your week went.
