Neverending To-Eat List
“Mee Pork Tah” from “Boon Wah Fishball Noodles” (#01-42) - I wasn’t expecting much from my $3 bowl but ended up slurping it with gusto. The noodles were cooked perfectly al dente, and the fishballs, were large and bouncy. I wished there was more chew to the minced meat but if you like it soft and “powdery”, theirs will please. Interestingly, the chilli sambal was not the usual sweet style. Instead, it’s savoury and there was a pleasant grittiness to it. The lady who prepared my order told me her mum-in-law made it. I didn’t find the sambal very spicy, so do ask for extra if you prefer your noodles to pack a big kick. Soup is clear and quite plain. So unless you like that style, I think it’s better to get the dry version here.
It was lunch time & the pretty popz Alexandra food village was packed with options. Competition is strong the vendors and therefore value for $ awesome eats like this are mainstays of the hawker scene. Unlike other wanton 🏠, the springy wanton noods here doesn’t come drizzled in black, sweet sauce nor red chilli/ tomato sauce. As pictured, it’s served in its purest, with light broth to wet the noodles. Presumably also the soup that the noods were blanched in. Comes with the usual charsiew and 4x wantons.
Tom Yum Mama - The dish came with a variety of ingredients such as prawns, squid, minced pork ball, scallops, and was finished off with two eggs.

So great to have KFC in a coffee shop! The chicken was so crispy and juicy, and not oily at all. They were quite generous with their honey butter powder, which surprisingly went really well with the fried chicken. The other flavours (spicy and soy) weren’t that great - the sauce was a little too wet for my liking and taste-wise, not as interesting as the honey butter. Quite cheap for KFC and definitely worth the price!
Know that going into Noodle Thai-Thai Kitchen means there’s a possibility of you leaving with puffy lips, runny nose and a fully satisfied tummy. Located a few doors down from Mrs Pho on Beach Road, Noodle Thai-Thai Kitchen dishes out flavourful and authentic bowls of noodles. Their Spicy Thai Thai Soup Noodles ($6.90) is not to be reckoned with — its soup is cooked with a generous portion of fiery hot chili powder commonly used in Thailand. What makes this stall stand out from the rest is its abundance of ingredients, from crispy pork rinds to fishcakes and meatballs. I was introduced by my friend @aikbengchia to "Babas Peranakan" (#02-225), a stall at Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre that specialises in Peranakan "chap chye png". He told me he ate here nearly every day after his friend enlightened him of their existence last August. It's all the proof I needed of how good their food must be. And true enough, I had a most satisfying lunch for a very affordable $6.
As you can tell from my photo, it was a no holds barred event when it came to me ordering. Faced with the numerous mouthwatering dishes, I knew I had to go big or go home.
Everything was tasty but the two standouts in my overloaded plate were the omelette (it was just like how my grandma use to cook hers - with sliced big onions and chilies) and the crispy fried chicken (the use of "kunyit" in the marinade made it very aromatic). They make the latter in small batches and this popular item moves very quickly. So at times, you may need to wait for a couple of minutes while they are being fried.
The curry gravy splashed on my rice was rich and fragrant, so do ask for more of it if you like your carbs to be loaded with "lemak-ness". Don't miss out on their "sambal belachan" either if you can handle spiciness as it seems to pair well with everything else.
(Note: They close on Wednesdays).
If you like your black carrot cake super smooth, sweet, a little wet with charred taste then this is it!! A generous amount of thick sweet sauce coats on the slippery smooth blocks of carrot cake and the chye poh gives a good crunch which releases the sweet salty flavor when you bite into it!
Weekend = Indulgence. Craving for some legit Grilled Cheese Sandwich after workshop. A wonderful combination of gruyere and taleggio cheese sandwich between perfectly toasted bread, see that gooey cheese as you break them apart! Or add $3 for some tender braised beef short rib filling.
My favorite has got to be the interesting east-meets-west fusion of Oriental Bolognaise ($20) that was one umami party with the tingly numbness kicking in slowly but surely. With perfectly al dente angel hair pasta tossed in savour pork ragout, Sakura ebi, onsen tamago and wilted kale, these were surprisingly comforting elements inspired by soybean paste noodles. Opted for the spicy version with additional $2 and survived so I say go for it! #burpple
Noodle dishes are usually the ones I look out for in Chinese and Zi Char restaurants to help determine a second visit, and Diamond Kitchen whips up a mean plate of Fried Bee Hoon using their signature Gan Xiang sauce! It was fragrant, studded with fresh prawns, mussels and slices of pork belly, but the best part of all, was the bee hoon that fully soaked up the slightly spicy-sweet addictive sauce. It was so packed with flavour and a nice amount of heat that this one-size portion meant for 4 will be gone in minutes!
Thank you to Veronica of @sixthsensepr and @diamondkitchensg for the super warm hospitality and @burpple for the kind invite! 🙆🏻
I would have to say, gone are the days of cheap hawker food, well at least there was a lot of "liao" like prawns & sotong compared to the other mees out there!!
A little greasy, a little sweet, a lot spicy and a lot satisfying. Can't explain why but whenever the rain pours, I get a craving for less-than-healthy food, like this Macaroni Goreng. Anyone else feels the same?
