Here's the perfect celebration pie for grandma, or anybody with an old soul. The Banana Pie ($25 a pie, $2.50 a slice) from this old-school bakery in Katong Shopping Centre is a signature you should not miss. Expect a buttery, crumbly crust encasing a moist filling that is generous on sliced fresh bananas (they use both 'ang ba cheo' and 'pang cheo' bananas). A layer of dessicated coconut and a sprinkling of crushed nuts add a nice crunch to it all. This comforting pie is just sweet enough and not at all cloying — it is no wonder this is a favourite among long-time regulars! They often sell out by mid-afternoon, sometimes earlier, so plan wisely! Pro tip: Pick up a box of their rich Chocolate Tarts (five for $4.50, another best seller) while you're there.

If you're in the market for a cake to please that guy friend who doesn't enjoy sweets, this might just be the perfect treat. The Chirashi Cake ($40) feeds four to eight people, and is wonderfully over-the-top in terms of presentation. We're talking approximately four bowls of freshly diced and marinated sashimi, an insane amount of ikura on the side and generous spoonfuls of sea urchin blanketing a bed of sushi rice. Just the sheer size of the takeaway dish (think 'lou hei' plate) makes people do a double take. The Chirashi Cake is something sashimi lovers should experience, just make sure your friends love chirashi too!

This under-the-radar neighbourhood bakery in Bedok is run by Lynda Ann, a passionate young self-taught baker who's quietly drawing the crowds for her quality bakes. Don't expect the fancy stuff here — the cakes are relatively simple, but they are delicious and made with love and care. Her signature Rainbow Cake (from $48 for 500g) is a visually arresting centrepiece perfect for the drama queen among your friends, but we also like the less flashy (but no less tasty) Carrot Cake ($29 for 500g) with a luscious cream cheese frosting and the Chocolate Epiphany ($37 for 500g) — a seriously rich chocolate cake with crunchy hazelnut praline layers. Lynda Ann also has various other special bakes like Boston Cream Pie (order at least two weeks ahead), so contact her to ask for an order sheet.

You may think of Island Creamery as that spot where students go to enjoy quality ice cream after school, but it is also a terrific spot to order a delightful ice cream cake from. The well-loved Mud Pie ($45 for whole cake, $5.90 a slice) features a trio of ReversO (chocolate), Cookies'n Cream and Burnt Caramel ice cream encased in a thin Oreo shell. Every bite of the oreo base, crumbs and ice cream somehow never gets too sweet, and won't fail to make you feel like a kid again. One Mud Pie can easily feed 10 to 12, plus if you order online, you can request the number of slices you'd like the cake to be cut in, making it easier to serve! This is one treat that's perfect for all ages.

This fancy German restaurant at the first floor of Rendezvous Hotel gets it right with this beast of a German-style Black Forest Cake ($12) — three layers of incredibly moist chocolate sponge cake held together by silky smooth whipped cream. It is filled with kirsch-soaked cherries and covered in a celebratory confetti of chocolate flakes, making this boozy masterpiece perfect for an alcohol-loving friend, or even your grandpa! The full-sized cake weighs in at 1.5kg and costs a whopping $128.40, so unless you have a big group to feed, we suggest getting a slice or two instead.

Look no further for a fruity celebration cake that tastes like sunshine on a plate. The Passionfruit Meringue (from $48.15 for a 6-inch cake) from renowned bakery The Patissier is a favourite, and with good reason! The lightly sweetened meringue sponge cake has a nice 'crisp' to it, and it goes so well with the very tropical filling of passion fruit mousse, fresh mangoes and strawberries. It is on the pricier side, but the quality of ingredients and harmony of flavours and textures make it well worth the splurge. Just make sure it's for someone you really, really like.

Tucked away in the basement of sleepy mall The Central, this nondescript shop specialises in just one item — tiramisu — and it also happens to be one of the Burpple community's favourite renditions of the Italian cake! They offer several flavours like dark cherry and pistachio but for special celebrations, go straight for the Classico (from $30 for 500g / $7.20 a slice) — this timeless classic will not fail you. Light, fluffy, aromatic with bittersweet coffee and generous on the Kahlúa, we also appreciate how they've nailed the ratio between ladyfingers and mascarpone, resulting in a moist (yet not overly so) piece of perfection.

Delicius Pasticceria offers a wide selection of Japanese cakes, most of which involve freshly whipped cream, sponge cake and, if you're dining in, fresh fruit artfully decorated on the plate. We are big fans of the Pomme Fromage (from $20 for a 12cm cake, $6 a slice), a quintessential Japanese cheesecake that is soft and more dense than fluffy, like a cross between a sponge cake and traditional cheesecake. A few forkfuls into the cake and you'll find an apple compote buried closer to the bottom of the cheesecake, much like a surprise centre! The Delicius (from $25 for 12cm cake, $6.50 a slice) is the other best seller — a richer version of Pomme Fromage involving Brie de Meaux cheese and apricot jam on the top, leaving a lingering fruity flavour on the palate.

This humble bakery tucked away in Geylang Bahru doesn't get much attention, but it should. Unlike its name, the bakes here are delicate and beautiful. This shop is known for its legendary cupcakes, some of which have been upgraded into whole cakes. The Sally ($48) is a dense, dark chocolate cake frosted with a lusciously rich and creamy peanut butter frosting — sounds indulgent but it's actually not too sweet! You'll be glad to know that part of the bakery donates part of its profits towards feeding hungry children in Timor Leste. How's that for a truly meaningful celebration cake?

There's something about the best-selling All Chocolate (from $34 for 6-inch cake, does not come in slices) that makes it so special despite the sparse presentation. This dark chocolate cake features thin layers of gooey dark chocolate fudge that is rich and bittersweet — pretty much every chocolate lover's delight! We are also fans of the Super Stacked Chocolate Cake ($7.90 a slice). It is much denser and richer than the All Chocolate, so much so that you need only a few forkfuls to satiate even the biggest chocolate cravings. It's only available in slices though — perfect for an intimate celebration.

Usually, cakes bought off the shelf hardly impress, but at Four Leaves, its best-selling Strawberry Shortcake ($28 for small) and Coco Exotic ($30 for small) are both convenient, tasty winners. The former is a vanilla sponge cake layered with sweetened strawberry slices, while the latter comes with layers of light chocolate mousse, smooth and rich hazelnut spread, and a crunchy wafer in the middle. It's almost a rite-of-passage cake for many of us really, having eaten them at least once during our school years! Let's be real — the Coco Exotic is the kind of Ferrero Rocher combo that is so good, it will have you crunching and munching with a smile from ear to ear.

No frosting. No decorations. Yes, it certainly looks plain but this unassuming slice of Salted Caramel Cheesecake ($50 for a 6-inch cake, $8 a slice) from Bakerzin doesn't need extras to blow you away. It's got a super rich sea salt caramel layer mixed with just the right amount of Valrhona dark chocolate for that slight tinge of bitterness. Buttered on top of a smooth, creamy cheesecake that sits on a crumbly biscuit base, this sits right on that fine line between sweet and tangy — what we imagine the love child of a New York cheesecake and a bottle of salted caramel spread would taste like!
