New Restaurants, Cafes and Bars in Singapore: September 2016
Located within Eat@Seven in Suntec City and next to Tempura Kohaku, this cosy space dishes out hearty pork cutlet sets that will leave you feeling utterly satisfied with its refillable rice and cabbage. Go for the Thick Slice Pork Loin Cutlet Set Meal ($21.50) instead of the fillet, the former is juicer and easier to chow down! Fancy a little more variety in your meal? Get the Fried Shrimp and Thick Slice Pork Loin Cutlet Set Meal ($23) — it comes with two freshly breaded shrimps deep fried in Agedoki's original blend of soy and rapeseed oil. Wash it all down with a cup of refillable Green Tea ($2)! Pro tip: Like its sister outlet Tempura Kohaku, Tonkatsu Agedoki commands a long wait, so get there early if you don't want to wait an hour for lunch.

Sarnies is a fantastic spot for a super clean yet hearty meal when we need a detox or healthy reset, but it can also get really crowded during lunch. So, while you can, beat the crowd and head to Jar'd by Sarnies for their new range of salads in jars AND a superb Flat White ($5) to go. The strictly takeaway stand in the bustling basement of One Raffles Place has four salad jars to offer — each layered with different ingredients. Go for the crowd favourite Tuna Tataki Salad ($12.50 for 750ml, $16 for 1 litre) that comes with a tasty soy and mirin dressing, seared tuna, crunchy japanese cucumbers and topped with bonito flakes. When you're ready to eat, just give it a good shake. Unopened jars of salad stay fresh for up to two days, so you can stock them in your office fridge if you know you its a busy work day ahead. Bring the jars back to get $1 off your next salad purchase!

Haakon (pronounced as 'haw-coon') is a Norwegian-style cafe in the new Raffles Holland V building (just across from Holland Village MRT Station) that serves healthy eats all day. Swing by with your fitspo colleagues during lunch service for the Vegan Bowl ($9.90). It comes with quinoa, hummus, sundried tomatoes and avocado — all nutritious and delicious. Looking for a midday snack? Get Haakon's Classic Acai Bowl (from $7.90), which comes with a base of chia seeds and granola, topped with plenty of blueberries, coconut flakes and bananas. It's rich in antioxidants and a great energy booster! Haakon is also a nice light-filled place to hang while sipping on a Breakfast Smoothie ($5.90 for medium, $6.90 for large), thanks to the high bar seats and big windows that face the street.

The UK's famed Pizza Express has finally arrived on our shores. Set in the basement of Scotts Square, this casual chic spot specialises in — you got it, pizza — using dough that is made fresh in-house. To avoid filling up too soon, go for the Romana pizzas, which sport thinner, crispier crusts. The Alba ($20) is a tasty one topped with Calabria-styled sausage, ricotta, fennel seeds, Grada Padano, passata and mozzarella; while the Giardiniera ($18) is a vegetarian option topped with hearty veggies including asparagus, butternut squash and roasted peppers. The menu also includes pastas, but the Burpple community hasn't been very impressed with those, so we suggest sticking to the tried-and-tested pizzas first!

This cosy, 35-seater joint is the latest addition to the now thriving Gemmill Lane back alley, serving up French-Japanese small and large plates and skewers, along with tasty cocktails. Its meats and seafood are cooked over binchotan (white charcoal) shipped from Japan, hence its name. Dishes to try include the Foie Gras ($21), cleverly shaven and served with daikon, and the Madai ($25), smoked sea bream with eggplant, radish and sherry vinaigrette. For drinks, go for the Binchotan ($23), a combination of Japanese and Scotch whisky, egg white, honey and lime. The vibes are sexy and intimate but prices can add up, so save this for a special occasion.

Here's a venue to catch up with a large group of friends over hearty zi char dishes, all in the comfort of an air-conditioned restaurant. Located on the second floor of City Square Mall, Wok Master's menu is extensive, portions are big, and prices are reasonable. The Curry Fish Head ($28) is a must — the bubbling pot ladened with vegetables is present on every table, and easily feeds three comfortably. For those who cannot handle the spice, get the Claypot XO Crayfish Tang Hoon ($14 for small, $28 for big) to share instead — it comes with a massive portion of noodles and is topped with an egg. Other noteworthy dishes include the saucy Mongolian Chicken ($10 for small, $16 for large) and the tender Golden Salted Egg Spare Ribs ($12 for small, $18 for large) — all great for sharing!

Taking over the defunct Jones the Grocer on the fourth floor of Mandarin Gallery, the swanky new Royal London Duck serves delicious roasts meats alongside stellar dim sum. Although the kitchen is helmed by the same chef who opened London Fat Duck at Scotts Square, the duck skin here leans more towards the thin and crispy variety, not fatty. Come to this sprawling, high ceilinged space with your family in tow. Don't be shy to order the Royal London Duck ($13 for quarter, $25 for half and $48 for whole), a plate of resoundingly crisp Crispy Pork ($15.80) and chunky cubes of Signature Honey BBQ Pork ($16.80) to share. There are also excellent dim sum dishes like the Royal London Duck Black Pepper Bun ($5.80 for three) and XO Sauce Fried Turnip Cake ($5.80) to tuck into. Don't forget to have it all with their fiery black chilli — it's potent, but highly satisfying.

New additions to the City Hall area are not to be taken for granted, at least not for those working nearby. Located on the second floor of Raffles City Shopping Centre, the newly opened Muji also houses their second Muji Cafe, making it a one-stop shop for Japanophiles. While we wouldn't necessarily go out of our way to splurge $16.90 on any casual lunch, this healthy yet tasty Basic Set ($7.80) is right up our alley. Choose from two styles, Japanese or Western, and select one cold deli of your choice, one side (hijiki salad or onsen egg), one soup (miso or cream of pumpkin and carrot) and one base (white rice or bread). There's also the Chicken Nanban Donburi ($14.90) that comes with fried chicken, avocado, mesclun salad, cherry tomatoes and daikon sprouts set on a bed of their yummy ten grain rice.
