The use of fresh produce that GASTRONOMAD prides themselves on, comes through in this dish. The roasted carrots, pumpkin and blistered heirloom tomatoes are done deliciously well, that each retains its natural crunch and crisp while still cooked all the way through with slightly charred edges. The three tiger prawns that top the dish are also seasoned well and cooked to a plump, juicy texture.

The saffron risotto itself sees spots of chimichurri and the flavours are great — aromatic yet refreshing. The rice however, is just a tad over the firm, al dente texture I’d expect of a good risotto.

Lawa Bintang has now moved to an industrial park - 9008 Tampines Street 93 Singapore 528843. Yes it is rather secluded and requires some travelling effort to uncover this hidden gem but it is all worth it, if you like big fat lobster in your nasi lemak. 😋

Singapore's food scene is doing wonders this year as we celebrate our national dishes. You will find one being recreated in several renditions and going viral on social media recently - Nasi Lemak. We had the nasi lemak burger and let's now dive into the premium version, Lobster Nasi Lemak.

Update: Due to the overwhelming popularity, Lawa Bintang is currently selling only Lobster Nasi Lemak and Nasi Lemak Ayam Wing. Each customer is entitled to maximum of 2 sets of Lobster Nasi Lemak. There are changes to opening hours as well. For now, Lawa Bintang is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9am to 2pm. To avoid disappointment due to limited number of lobsters, do note that the queue starts forming as early as 7am and the average queue time is 3 hours. When I was there on Sunday, lobsters sold out by 12 noon. Remember, don't queue with an empty stomach! 😊

If it's time to cheat, cheat right. The Halal-friendly offshoot of burger bar FatBoy's, this Muslim-owned joint on Bali Lane is just the place to load up on hearty burgers and decadent milkshakes — do yourself a favour and leave all thoughts of calories aside. Choose from eight pre-selected burgers (from $11.80) or go crazy with a DIY — ingredients range from $1 to $8.80. All patties here are cooked till well done, and burgers are served with a side of fries. According to Burppler Alvin Wang, the signature Wimpy ($15) — a thick beef or lamb patty set on sesame seed buns and topped with turkey bacon, melted aged cheddar and fried egg — is as good as the version at FatBoys. Burppler Riny Wan even found an off the menu burger Beef-Ucken (turkey bacon, beef patty and fried chicken, $22) served with truffle fries. If your heart and gut can take it, seal the deal with their luscious, sinfully good Gula Melaka Ten Dollar Shake ($10). Pro tip: There is typically a long line at dinner, so make a reservation before heading down!

Deep fried chicken wrapped around Turkey ham, cheddar cheese & mozarella.

The kueh is the soft, creamy kind and they are very generous with the preserved radish bits – well-fried until fragrant and slightly crunchy. Topped with crisp shallots and that robust sambal chilli, who cares about the prawns, right? Not that they're not good, but when they're just simply poached, they immediately become "just the garnish". And guess what, the spring onion does a much better job than being just that. Ok, that's all.

With experienced Italian Muslim chef Gero at its helm, this homey Muslim-owned restaurant in OneKM Mall serves up really hearty Italian food — it was actually the highest rated Italian spot in our recent Burpple survey on Halal food joints. Decked out in wood accents and warm lighting, the setting is comfortable, and we like that servers are happy to rearrange the seats to accommodate large groups. The peaceful setting makes it great for business meetings outside the CBD too. Everything on the menu is made from scratch, so it's hard to go wrong. The Pizzas (from $17) come highly recommended, and the Pastas (from $15.80) are all cooked till al dente. If there's one dish to try, make it the Gnocchi ($19), which sees pillowy homemade potato dumplings slicked in a delicious tomato cream sauce, served with salmon and leeks. Save space for dessert. The Tiramisu Nutella ($8.80) puts a hazelnut spin on the classic, or go for the Dessert Platter ($19), which showcases mini portions of sweets including tiramisu, panna cotta, creme brulee and cannoli — great with a shot of Espresso ($4.50)!

[Halal | Tasting] This is Rayz Bistro's Ribeye Steak ($28?), served with sweet potato fries and a deep brown gravy (unfortunately I forgot to ask if there's any special flavour to it) which is hefty in both portion and pricing. I don't know about the meat maestros, but I thought this was pretty enjoyable? The steak had a considerable umami, beefy flavour which I believe would satisfy one's carnivorous cravings.

The sweet potato fries also deserve a mention here. Their thinly crisp façade encapsulates a part-fluffy, part-mushy sweet potato flesh. Biting into this was as satisfying as biting into a McDonald's fries, I daresay.

My gripe with this, however, is that it is simply good…it doesn't have an edge to it. I'm just not sure if the dish is worth nearly $30 based on taste alone? But given the establishment's location (opposite Wilkie Edge), you would have to have a compelling reason, like celebrating an occasion, to dine in here. In which case, having the Ribeye Steak too shabby of a choice. Otherwise, this place's items may be out of many's price range. (7.3/10)

Located up the road from Geylang Serai Market, this new Muslim-owned spot is the place to go for a DIY pizza buffet. You're provided with mini pizza bases, on which you can sprinkle your favourite toppings from their selection laid out — options run the gamut from chicken ham and hot dogs to pineapple and bell pepers, and even sweets like Nutella, marshmallows and all sorts of child-friendly cereal. Pop the pizza into the mini oven on your table to cook for about five minutes, and enjoy! While the pizzas cook, help yourself to a buffet of fillers including spaghetti and soup. Every diner gets two chicken drumlets to munch on too. Bring the family — kids especially will have a whale of a time playing chef. Diners are given 1.5 hours per seating to enjoy the buffet, so pace yourselves. Pro tip: Rhombus Pizza is currently offering an introductory price of $15 per adult and $12 for children (U.P. $18.90 and $15.90 respectively). Reservations are essential.
