Brute brownie with single scoop [$8.90] / premium flavour [+$0.70] // A nut-less brownie (YAY for me 😍) that's fudgy, dense and chocolatey, topped with a single scoop of ice cream flavour of your choice!

I chose the genmaicha flavour, which is only available for a limited time till end of July. In case you are wondering, genmaicha is a roasted brown rice Japanese green tea that differs greatly from matcha, with a lingering roasted flavour and aroma. Texture was smooth and creamy, with a distinctive earthy note and roasted flavour that had a subtle lingering aroma. However, the flavour seemed to subside gradually which depleted my enjoyment ... or perhaps it's the rich cocoa flavours of the brownie that overpowered it? πŸ€” Almost 80% of the ice cream flavours are premium here hence do expect more damage incurred to your pocket. Samples of ice cream are provided upon request but the portion provided was really meagre that I could barely taste the flavours 😞. Prices are pretty steep for a neighbourhood ice cream cafe but makes a great refreshing treat for yourself when the weather shows no mercy(if you are in the vicinity) .

Thai green tea softserve [$7/cup] New flavour available till 8th August, each cup of Thai green tea softserve comes with toppings of milk crumbs and vanilla sponge cake cubes by default.

Texture was a tad too icy for my liking, though I do fancy the distinctive earthy note and lingering jasmine floral fragrance that was aromatic and refreshing! Vanilla sponge cake was soft, spongy, decent but I can't say the same so for the milk crumbs. Personally didn't fancy the addition of these milk crumbs that had a peculiar milk powder-alike flavour, somewhat like condensed milk that didn't really complement the Thai green tea softserve. Perhaps normal almond crumbles would have been a better replacement...

Matcha white chocolate brownie [$5.50] A special item that's only available on 11th July, I was lucky enough to lay my hands on this as it was sold out within the day!

😨 Thanks @welldressedsaladbarsg for the special reservation! No regrets travelling all the way for this brownie which was fudgy, dense and sufficiently moist πŸ’š. The green tea flavour was distinctive with a lingering jasmine-alike floral fragrance. Coupled with a pleasant tinge of sweetness of white chocolate and dark chocolate drizzles, I would personally recommend consuming this warm(instead of chilled as recommended by the staff) for a more distinctive and prominent matcha flavour, as well as a softer and more fluffy texture. Pair it with the vegan ice creams offered (a pity matcha was sold out on my visit 😭) for a perfect hot-and-cold combination πŸ’š What's more, u get to enjoy $1 off every cake + ice cream combo! πŸ˜‰ .

Matcha berry mochi waffles [$13.50+] Matcha flavoured mochi waffles, served with strawberries, blueberries, homemade cacao nibs, mini marshmallows, speculoos crumb, matcha sauce and a softserve flavour of your choice.

I decided to opt for maple lavender, which had a prominent floral flavour and lingering fragrance that was pleasant, aromatic and refreshing! πŸ’– Texture was also smooth, creamy and a melt-in-the mouth kind that I adore πŸ˜‹. The matcha mochi waffles had a slightly crisp exterior coupled with a soft, chewy mochi interior. The matcha flavour was surprisingly distinctive, much to my liking with subtle lingering earthy notes. Coupled with a pleasant crunch factors from the speculoos crumbs and cacao nibs, tangy berries and a matcha sauce (wished there was more of this! πŸ’š), I polished off the entire portion all by myself, with guilt but no regrets πŸ˜‹.

Matcha fromage cheesecake [$35] Only available in limited quantity of 30 portions/day, best to head down early avoid disappointment.

Made with Hokkaido cream cheese, Italian mascarpone and premium matcha from Kyoto, this fromage cake comprises of two distinctive layers of matcha flavoured cream cheese cake and a top layer of mascarpone cream cheese, adorned with matcha sponge cake crumbs. Though the matcha flavour was rather mild and barely detectable, I was sold by the smooth, creamy and melt-in-the mouth texture of the luscious, decadent cheesecake. The cake was soft, creamy albeit light and not too overwhelming, making it a perfect afternoon treat or an aftermeal dessert! πŸ’šπŸ’– [PS: Heard there's a Hokkaido air tickets giveaway with the purchase of matcha fromage cheesecake. Double up ur chances by purchasing 2 matcha cakes instead of 1!] .

Nishio matcha/ Houjicha twist [$5.70/ cup, $6.20/cone] Available for a limited time (heard its till end of this week only), do head down this weekend to try the NEW houjicha (roasted green tea) before it's taken off the menu!

✨ Serving alongside Nishio matcha, having the dual flavours was a tea-riffic option that certainly didn't disappoint; much better than having the individual flavours in silo IMO. The combination was one with a robust, full bodied earthy flavour of Nishio matcha, coupled with its lingering pleasant umami note that blended harmoniously with the distinctive roasted flavour and aroma of the Houjicha softserve. The softserve was also smooth, creamy and thick, a melt-in-the mouth texture that I adore. Having tried the houjicha flavour in silo on my prior visit, I would highly recommend the twist (dual flavours) for the hardcore matchaholics as it comes with a stronger flavour profile .

Matcha/Lavender softserve [$7.90/ regular cup]
Lavender macaroon [$3.30]
Mystery flavour of the week: Lavender πŸ’œπŸ’œ!

Having tried this lilac floral flavour in silo on my prior visit, I decided to make a return trip for a dual flavour and also for the newly launched lavender macaroon (limited stocks available). The combination was not only a pleasant experience for the sight, but my palate was greatly satisfied as well. The earthy matcha flavour coupled with its characteristic bitter undertone surprisingly blended in harmoniously with the aromatic floral fragrance of lavender πŸ’šπŸ’œ. The lavender macaroon had a crisp meringue exterior with a lavender infused buttercream filling- smooth and creamy with a subtle floral fragrance that could have been more distinct. Looking forward to the next mystery flavour as always! πŸ’–πŸ’–

Organic matcha soft cream [medium: $7, large: $9] Made using Kirishima green tea (Kagoshima), the matcha softserve had a distinct earthy note with a subtle umami flavour.

Served with dustings of green tea powder, there was a mild lingering characteristic bitter undertone. Would personally prefer a smoother and more creamy texture; this was a tad too icy for my liking. In addition, portion could have been more generous, given the pricetag that came along πŸ˜…. [PS: only available at Takashimaya Food Fest till 16 July! Only medium and large size now- small isn't available anymore ☹️] .

Matcha fondue set [$16.90] Decided to give this fondue a shot since the special anniversary Houjicha tea set I have been yearning to try was sold out- and it was only 3pm on a Thursday afternoon 😭😭 The fondue comes with a pot of thick and creamy matcha ganache served warm as well as other elements for dipping and pairing: buttered toast, matcha warabi mochi, shiramata, langue de chat, matcha brownies and a mini cup of matcha softserve!

πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š The matcha flavour of the ganache was distinctive with a pleasant earthy note, with a striking resemblance to my favourite O'sulloc matcha milk jam spread πŸ’š. Texture was a tad too thick for my liking, personally felt that it could have been toned down for dipping purposes otherwise it's akin to consuming a jam spread. The matcha brownies (finally got to try!!πŸ˜‹) were fudgy and sufficiently moist, with a luscious chocolatey note. The layer of matcha flavoured brownie could have been more distinct in terms of flavour though. Shiratama and the buttered toasts were a complementary pairing to the thick matcha ganache whereas the other elements were better off consuming in silo - but of course, with the matcha ganache, its double the pleasure and enjoyment πŸ˜‹ Matcha warabi mochi was soft and chewy, coated with a substantial amount of matcha powder that provided a pleasant bitter undertone. Coupled with a cup of matcha softserve that's smooth, creamy and retaining a consistent standard of distinctive earthy flavour, a cup of hot steamed milk is also served after you are done consuming all the elements. Mix the hot milk with the remaining matcha ganache fondue to create your hot own matcha latte! 🍡Can't wait to try the houjicha fondue next time πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‹.

Matcha macchiato [$4.10- regular] Finally joining in the hype of matcha latte/ macchiato at the famous bubble tea shop.

Glad that the queue wasn't that bad and I managed to get my order within 10 minutes. The recommended sugar level would be 50%-100% but being a hardcore matchaholic, I decided to settle for 25% instead. True enough, the characteristic bitter undertone and intense earthy note is definitely not suited for the faint hearted. However, it never failed to disappoint me with the distinct and robust earthy note! πŸ’š Topped with a thick layer of creamy milk foam, you can either choose to consume it separately with the small spoon provided or mix it in with the matcha beverage. I would personally prefer consuming the two elements in silo to fully appreciate and savour the thick, intense earthy matcha coupled with the subtle sweetness of the creamy milk foam.

Matcha affagato [$8] Available exclusively at Old Hen Kitchen (Note: different branch from Old Hen Coffee), this dessert comprises of a scoop of vanilla ice cream garnished with speculoos crumbs and a mini pot of koicha served at the side.

The koicha was indeed thick, intense with a robust earthy note that's not suited for the faint hearted! As a hardcore matchaholic, I truly enjoyed the full bodied earthy flavour that came with a bitter undertone. (Ps: I can also consume it in silo just like how one drinks espresso). The vanilla ice cream was smooth and creamy, helping to dilute the koicha to achieve what is otherwise known as a "matcha latte" with its fragrant milky flavour. Speculums crumbs added a pleasant crisp factor while also enhancing the visuals. If you've noticed carefully, there are also specks of salt dusted beneath the ice cream which resulted in a lingering salty aftertaste. A pretty strange and incompatible combination to the other bitter-sweet elements that could have been omitted IMO.

Genmaicha/Houjicha Softserve

Large cup [$6.50] Apart from their signature matcha beverages, Matcha Project also offers softserves, with 2 different flavours that changes on a rotational basis. So glad I managed to try these 2 flavours before they were switched back to matcha/vanilla! The softserve is smooth, creamy with a melt in the mouth texture. The houjicha came with robust earthy and roasted flavour coupled with a lingering aroma that was pleasant and enjoyable. On the other hand, the genmaicha had a subtle earthy note that was more towards the milky side, paling in comparison to the stronger houjicha flavour. Hopefully houjicha would make a comeback soon πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»
