Local Delights

First time hearing of and tasting these durians. From old trees which produce fruits often considered to be the cream of the crop. Usually sold at a premium to the ordinary fare. Were they worth the premium? Most definitely! Very sweet with only a very very slight tinge of bitterness.

With a new improved broth, the prawn mee is now even more yummy. I would dare say that this is better than the ones I’ve had in Penang. I was slurping up all the stock even after I had finished the noodles.

Good news for those who work at Raffles Place. @penangbagus will open up a stall (no. 1) at the Food Junction on the 5th floor of One Raffles Place, hopefully within the next week. They will only be serving char kuay teow (another one of my favourites), Penang prawn mee and Penang lor bak. I will definitely be paying them a visit to get my fix of char kuay teow and prawn mee!

The fish is fresh and yummy while the stock is super tasty. Do note that the portions are quite small.

This is now my go-to satay stall in Singapore. Very close to my all time favourite in JB. *
I liked the beef satay the best. It had the right flavour and texture. In contrast, I found the mutton a little less tasty and chewy. Will stick to beef and chicken in future. I didn’t order the chicken this time round but it was yummy the last time we had it.

That is the name of the stall. It is located next to the famous chicken rice stall. The chicken rice by the way is also very delicious.

The last time I had the Hokkien mee, I had tarpau-ed to bring home and it still tasted amazing. It was even more so fresh from the wok, especially when eaten with the oh-so-yummy chilli. This is now my favourite Hokkien mee in Singapore.

I was asked why the Army Market had so many other names. It is also called Beach Road or Golden Mile Food Centre. I don’t really have an answer. All I know is that it is called the Army Market because of the many army surplus shops upstairs.

I was so sad to find out that @ron.chef will be closing at the end of this month that I immediately went to have my fix. I think I may need to pay him another visit before he closes. We will miss you!

I loved this too! The sauce was not too sweet and it was spicy enough. If you have space for a side dish, it should be this. Yummy!

I’ve been searching for one which can rival my old favourite in JB. This comes really close! The gravy was not too sweet, slightly sour and slightly savoury.

We’ve been meaning to try this but the queue is forever too long. As we were dining opposite the road, we waited for the crowd to dissipate and quickly hopped over to join the queue.

Was it worth the wait? Yes and no. The rice was fragrant and the chicken wings were awesome. The ngoh hiang (meat roll) was equally as crispy and tasty as the wings.

What was disappointing was the sambal. It was a little sweet and not spicy enough. No oomph! *

This was different from the version we are used to, in a good way though. It was spicier with less of the sweet peanut sauce taste. I liked this version more 😋!
