A monthly special for October, this bento is served in a 3-tier-stack (swipe to the end to view), imparting a traditional Japanese concept to the unique presentation! 👍🏻 Comprising of a base of desserts x sides - kimchi😍, half a tamago aka. ramen egg, assorted fruits and matcha kanten jelly with azuki, the middle layer comprises of sesame rice ball compactly wrapped up with an exterior of yakiniku pork. Ending off with a top layer of chicken nanban with tartar sauce, it was indeed a dilemma in deciding which layer to consume first! 😅 The deep fried chicken is done to a crisp battered exterior, with an interior of tender and juicy meat that pairs well with the creamy, tangy tartar sauce. On the other hand, my favorite component of all got to be yakiniku wrapped sesame rice ball, topped with a dollop of spicy mayo and nacho cheese (portion could have been more generous tho 😅) where the yakiniku pork slices were tender with minimal layer of fats, flavourful with a bacon-alike smoky flavour. The compact fillings of sesame rice encased within was fragrant as well. Not really a fan of the dessert elements here (though I have a sweet tooth) as it was mediocre IMO, with the matcha kanten jelly having barely any flavour. Texture is more solid and agar agar-alike, unlike the usual soft, wobbly pudding-alike texture in jellies. Kimchi was my favourite element in this box here, coming with a characteristic tinge of spice that was tangy, flavourful and a great companion to the rice in the yakiniku onigiri! 💖 Many hits and misses here but considering the substantial portion that comes with a reasonable pricetag, this 3-tier bento was is worth a try after all! ✨ .

[PS: Only available for the month of October, at the Orchard Central outlet] .

Once again, SHIROGOMA is back! 💛Available exclusively at the Cathay outlet, it now comes with a dual twist with Goma (black sesame)- Yuan Yang combo for the hardcore sesame lovers! 👁‍🗨 Glad to have enjoyed a 1-for-1 softserve&drink set with @burpple ‘s Burpple Beyond programme too! Double the portion at the same price, why not? 😉 The Shirogoma (white sesame) softserve surprisingly overwhelmed the Goma, which differed from what was expected initially. The characteristic roasted, nutty flavour of the white sesame was distinct and fragrant, coupled with a slightly grainy lingering mouthfeel which was a tad too coarse for my liking and I would personally prefer if the texture was smoother instead! 😅 Flavour seems to have been toned down slightly comparing to my last try at the previous pop-up at Takashimaya 😢. Moving on to the drinks, the Iced Matcha Yuzu comprises of a base of citrus yuzu peels and jam, along with cold whisked matcha. The cold whisked matcha came with a robust umami, earthy note when drank in silo but mixing the two elements resulted in the citrusy flavour of yuzu stealing the limelight away and toning down the earthiness of matcha. Nevertheless, it was still pretty refreshing and light to the palate, a great beverage to indulge in when the weather shows no mercy 🌞. On the other hand, the houjicha milk tea (served with sugar by default) was a tad too sweet for my liking, despite the characteristic roasted flavour being distinctive and prominent still. Unless are a hardcore houjicha lover, you can opt for the beverage to be sugar-free too! .

[PS: Shirogoma is available for a limited time only at the Cathay outlet, replacing Hokkaido milk flavour for now] .

If you have not heard of it, @cozycornersg’s last day of operations would be on 11st Nov! 👋🏻👋🏻😥😭. As one of my favorite vegan places in Singapore, I am always looking forward to new upcoming creations from them that almost always never fail to disappoint!👍🏻 Featured here is the VEGAN HOUJICHA cream cake, made in house by a Japanese chef (also the wife of the owner 😉)! ✨ Using houjicha powder from @matchayasg , the characteristic roasted flavour was surprisingly prominent, distinct with a pleasant lingering aroma! 😋 The plain sponge layers were also soft, fluffy and sufficiently moist, further enhanced with houjicha cream sandwiched within and a surprise element of fresh fruit slices embedded within the smooth, luscious cream 🍎🥝🍊! Apart from Houjicha, there’s also matcha and chocolate creme cake flavours available as well, but do take note that these freshly baked cakes are only available on a rotational basis. Remember to enquire and check on their availability before you head down to avoid disappointment! 👊🏻 .

A default meatless dish comprising of salted egg linguine along with an assortment of greens: shimeiji mushrooms, broccoli, carrots, leeks as well as the addition of green and red chilli for an extra spice factor! 🔥 Topped with an onsen egg that elicits a positive vibrant response as always 🤩, the linguine was done to an al dente texture with a fragrant aromatic tinge of spice. Would personally prefer if the salted egg flavour was more distinct, as it was overwhelmed by the tangy spiciness of the chilli and curry leaves incorporated within. Not a great issue for me though, being one who adores spice. Also love how the variety of greens helped to enhance the visuals while adding a pleasant mouthfeel to the overall texture of the dish, from the chewy shimeiji mushrooms to the crunchy broccoli and carrots. The addition of candied bacon left no room of regrets and was in fact the highlight among all ingredients here, coming with a crisp texture and a perfect balance of savory smoky and a sweet caramelised flavour 😋. Personally I still prefer the 卤肉面 at the previous pop up, which was more flavourful imo, but this would be a good option if you feel like eating clean(er) 😅 .

[PS: This is only available today (20th October) for @damien_tc ‘s pop up 3 in collaboration with @bemyguestcafe ] .

Mystery fillings within each choux puff, it all boils down to your luck! 😉 Available in 5 different flavours, I was lucky enough to have gotten the HOUJICHA flavour! 💛 Specially crafted by @damien_tc at @bemyguestcafe ‘s previous pop up II, the freshly baked choux puff comes with an interior of houjicha cream filling that oozes out mercilessly. Intricately plated with a fine dining-alike elements of assorted berries, pomegranate seeds, tuile, sponge cake cubes and garnished with mint leaves, the latter is recommended to be eaten after finishing the choux puff as a refreshing palate cleanser. The houjicha cream is smooth, slightly creamy, coming with a distinct roasted flavour and pleasant lingering aroma. A pleasant companion to the choux puff that came with a crisp, crusty exterior and a soft, pillowy interior. Though this is available only at the previous pop-up, I am certainly looking forward to other new special & surprise creations for the pop up III today (20th October)✨ .

Unfortunately, this seasonal special flavour is only available on weekdays till 19th October, limited to 10
sets/day. Just one day before @rizlabosg moves out of @japanfoodtown at Wisma Atria to the new location at Habitat by @honestbeesg , I was glad to be one of the lucky few ones who managed to try this limited edition flavour, after queuing for around 20+ minutes at 11.30am 🙈. A stack of three soufflé pancakes topped purple sweet potato cream, fresh whipped cream, baked sweet potato, this also comes with vanilla ice cream at the side that’s topped with a ‘pumpkin hat’ chestnut and garnished with assorted nuts. Really love the texture of this thick, wobbly pancakes coming with an interior that’s soft, fluffy and light. Along with a batter that carries off a distinctive and lingering eggy flavour and fragrance, the purple potato cream was smooth, creamy, a distinctive characteristic roasted flavour coupled with a tinge of natural pleasant sweetness. A great companion to these thick and fluffy soufflé pancakes, along with fresh, light housemade whipped cream - my heart is sold! 💖 The bakes sweet potato cake with a characteristic soft, mushy texture, creamy with a melt-in-the-mouth kind of texture that I adore😋. The vanilla ice cream that’s served alongside is topped with a chocolate ‘spider web’ that pleasant crunch factor and a bittersweet cocoa flavour. A fragrant milky flavour and aroma that wasn’t too overwhelming, along with a smooth, creamy texture. It’s a great pity that this purple potato soufflé pancakes would not be available at the new location, but I certainly do look forward to see and try out other new and interesting creations there! 😉 .

Ibiza [$6.95] - With your choice of 2 fruits , 2 crunch and a sauce, I must certainly thank the friendly, flexible crew from the @wismaatria outlet who allowed me to swap one of the crunch with a fruit!💕 Opted for the twist of Wild Blueberry x Original flavour for the frozen yogurt, along with wild berries (fav fruit topping that’s unfortunately only available at certain outlets 😢), rockmelon, dragonfruit, chocolate coated sunflower seeds and my all-time-favourite cookie sauce. The wild blueberry flavour felt more like a mixed berry instead, with a characteristic tangy note and fruity sweetness. Would personally prefer if it was more sour instead, though the pairing with original frozen yogurt did seem to provide a slight compensation to the lack of sourness. Would have been better naming it off as ‘Wild berries’ or ‘Mix berries’ instead of the current ‘Wild Blueberry’ 🤭 ! Nevertheless, I still enjoyed this smooth, creamy and refreshing delight, which was a great combat to relief some heat when the weather shows no mercy! 🌝 .

Though @after7bakery has officially bid farewell from Canteen 13 at @ntu_sg on 17th Oct, fret not! It will be relocating to Kensington Square mall thereafter! Though the previous location would be much more convenient for me as an NTU student, I wouldn’t mind giving these freshly home-baked cakes another try, given its pocket friendly pricing that comes with a decent quality as well! ✨ The Yuzu Sakura cheesecake comes with a crisp and crumbly digestive biscuit base, along with a middle layer of yuzu infused cheesecake that was soft and slightly creamy. Topped off with Sakura jelly that came with a subtle floral fragrance, the characteristic citrusy flavour of the yuzu cheesecake would have been better if it was more distinct. Nevertheless, it was still pretty enjoyable with a tangy, refreshing note, along with a smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel that wasn’t too overwhelming. A pity the texture seems a little too soft and fragile that it falls apart easily (swipe to view) and it would have been great if it was firmer and more chilled! On the other hand, the matcha cotton cheesecake is made using Kazumi matcha powder, a higher grade matcha powder which accounted for the presence of an earthy flavour, one that’s distinct albeit subtle, along with mild lingering bitter undertone. Texture was soft, spongy albeit a little dry for my liking. Nevertheless, no complains given the affordable, pocket-friendly pricing! 💛 On a side note, I certainly do hope that the prices would stay the same after the relocation! 🙏🏻🙏🏻 .

Durian or Matcha? 🤔🤔 Being an anti-durian consumer but an avid fan of matcha, I was glad that looks can be deceiving at times! 😅 This spiky, durian-alike cake turns out to be a Matcha x White sesame flavour in disguise of a durian! ✨ . Yay or Nay? 🙃
.
Always seeing Matcha x Black sesame but how about Matcha x WHITE sesame? 😉 That’s so match-a perfect combo for me, as an anti-black sesame consumer. Ever since I’ve tried the Shirogoma (white sesame) softserve from Matchaya, I have turned into a white sesame convert and I m glad to say that the one here didn’t disappoint and was pretty impressive👍🏻. The white sesame mousse surrounding the matcha ganache was slightly creamy, a smooth and light texture, along with a prominent roasted flavor and lingering aroma which stole the limelight away from the other matcha elements. With a base of white sesame matcha jaconde that’s soft, spongy and sufficiently moist, the core of matcha ganache was distinct in its characteristic earthy flavour when consumed in silo, coming with a thick and creamy texture that resembled a jam spread. On the downside, the spiky, durian-like exterior of matcha cream was mild and barely detectable in its flavour, perhaps overwhelmed by the stronger white sesame companion. If you are a white sesame lover, this cake would greatly appeal to you! 💛.

NEW softserve flavours from @brotherbirdflagship that’s just launched today (14 October) at @statelandcafe ! 🍵☕️ Featured here is the ‘Matcha latte’- a dual twist of Matcha sorbet and Vietnamese Coffee softserve. Coffee or tea? Why not both? 😉 Perhaps somewhat like a Yuan Yang combo, this would be the tea-riffic combo for the matchaholics and caffeine addicts. Along with almond crumbles (the best topping as always), the matcha sorbet was icy with a distinct albeit subtle earthy note, one that was eventually overwhelmed and toned down by the Vietnamese coffee. On the downside, the Vietnamese coffee softserve came with a mild, diluted flavour which also lacked the characteristic coffee aroma that I would have adored. Texture wise, the dual flavoured softserve is slightly icy and lighter to the palate, without a dense and creamy mouthfeel. Would personally prefer if the flavours were more distinct and perhaps more lasting to the palate as well 😅. Nevertheless, I guess I would still head back again to try the matcha sorbet to fully appreciate and savour it’s true beauty 😌 .

Highly recommended by crew here, this certainly did not disappoint and was in fact, the most impressive dish among all we tried! 💖 Sandwiched within the thin tortilla sheets lies an interior of fluffy tom yum scrambled eggs, chicken ham, sliced tomatoes, Belgian cheddar cheese, sriracha aioli, topped with coriander, pomegranate and grated parmesan. Along with a drizzle of truffle oil, the tom yum scrambled eggs was clearly the highlight and winking factor here, with its aromatic tinge of spice and fragrance incorporated into the fluffy and slightly creamy scrambled eggs. Along with the addition of cheese and sriracha aioli that added a tangy piquant note, the thin crusted tortilla sheets came with an ideal crisp exterior. Topped with pomegranate seeds that were juicy with a burst of tangy, fruity sweetness, a refreshing counterbalance to the other savoury elements. Love how the dish scored well in both visuals and palatability, something that is always a challenge striking a perfect balance between the two .

Eggs Benedict with a twist, this would greatly appeal to those who adore spice in their food! 🔥 Instead of the usual hollandaise sauce, this comes topped up with cheddar cheese, which I would personally prefer if it’s melted for a greater cheesier impact👊🏻! Beneath that layer of cheese lies a poached egg which comes with a slight flow (swipe to view), gong bao chicken drenched in a thick, starchy and spicy-sweet sauce, along with cashew nuts, spring onions, leeks on a toasted English muffin. Along with sides of baked tomato and fried potato chunks, the latter was simply addictive, which was well sautéed with an ideal crisp exterior. Being one who adores spice, the spiciness of the gong bao gravy was one that managed to hit spot on for my palate, coming with a fiery kick that might be quite overwhelming for the faint hearted. Somehow it reminded me of Mala without the numbing sensation yet retaining a tangy, flavourful profile. Though prices here are on the steeper side, the cosy ambience and welcoming, amicable service made it up for it! 👍🏻✨ .
