Instead of a drink, hubby got this 'King of Chendol' as he loves shaved ice desserts. The generous drizzle of gula melaka and santan makes it deliciously sweet and lemak. The pandan jelly and red beans are nice and firm (hate the ones that are mushy). It's already good on it's own, but they topped it with durian pulp for good measure. Shiok level: maximum. It's also part of the NDP celebration menu, going for $5.20 a bowl.
The City Hall area doesn't quite have a lot of exciting options for dessert. Luckily H remembered about Noosh at Esplanade. An Ondeh-ondeh cake is exactly what we needed for tea time.
You can find this on most of tables at the restaurant. I love the fluffy pandan cake and crunchy bits of gula melaka. A scoop of vanilla ice-cream may seem a bit much, but it really goes well with the cake. If you think you don't have enough room in your tummy for dessert, trust me. This will go down fast and easy, and you'll be left staring at an empty plate wondering what happened to the dessert that you ordered just a minute ago.
For regular diners of The Malayan Council, if you ask me which place serves a better ondeh-ondeh cake and ice-cream combo, I feel the cakes at both places taste exactly the same.
Sticky Toffee Date Pudding ($6.90)
I've had this a couple of times at home, and it always tastes great, but to have it served warm at the cafe is truly the best way to enjoy it.
Lemon Cooler ($5.50)
A lemonade with added 'kala namak', an Indian volcanic rock salt. This makes it a 'naturally isotonic drink', according to the menu.
I've never had a sour and salty drink before, and the first few sips were definitely interesting. After that I gulped it all down fast, as it was a great thirst quencher and paired well with our sweet desserts. Not sure if this would be good with a savoury meal, though I'm more than happy to make another visit to find out.
Had the first spoonful and... I'm shook (as kids nowadays like to say). It was so amazingly good!
The trifle had a layer each of fresh cream, berry compote, dark chocolate cake and a chocolate cream topping. Each element was delicious on its own, yet together they were even better. It's decadent thanks to the rich dark chocolate cake, refreshing from the tangy berry compote, and the fresh cream just brings it all together to make the best damn trifle I've ever had.
It's a generous serving which you can share with a partner too.
Fluff Bakery always be killin' it with their bold and harmonious cupcake flavours. Even if you're not fond of mint, I urge you to try this flavour cause the mint frosting is subtly refreshing. It goes so well with the chocolate cake and chocolate fudge filling. Officially my new Fluff favourite!
