Friends Cafe HK 朋友冰室!

We reached 20mins past opening time, and there was already a snaking long queue. It took us around 30mins of waiting before we finally got in! Food was served pretty fast though as Hong Kong is all about instant comfort food.

French Toast with Peanut Butter ($3.50): I must say this is the MUST ORDER ITEM! I absolutely love this! Buttery, fragrant, crispy!

Stir-fried charsiew and egg with white rice ($6.50): Got this item because it was highly raved by others from the reviews I read. But no, this item is a no no for me. The egg wasnt the silky scrambled egg type, it was the chinese-style 99% cooked kind. I also didnt like the super fatty charsiew as I am not a fan of fatty char siew meats. This item was just on the drier side, with no sauce and a not scrambled dry egg.

Chicken Chop Rice with black pepper sauce ($7.50 set meal with half a slice of butter toast and luncheon meat): Ordered this item because it was also highly raved. I like the black pepper sauce given for this dish! I also like how lots of black pepper sauce was given, if not it will be quite hard for me to eat plain dry rice. Chicken Chop was on the dry side too, but still alright. Luncheon meat comfort food! The toast with butter can skip, the toast was quite hard, and not as nice as the french toast. (I suspect most ppl do not eat this free toast? The cashier staff even asked us when ordering whether we wanted the free toast, when you would have expected them to give without asking. Most prob to reduce food wastage)

Iced kumquat tea ($2.2): Tastes like yuzu, with some kumquat pulp in it! Paid 20 cents more for the iced tea option, but the drink came hot with ice cubes given. LOL ok, so i paid 20 cents for the few little ice cubes. But I guess that’s how iced tea drinks are served in Hong Kong too. Haha too funny to me.

All in all, paid about $20 for the meal for 2 pax. Whether I will come back again, not really. To me, Hong kong’s comfort food is something I think I can cook at home too! For the experience since one can’t travel, sure why not!

SBCD KOREAN TOFU HOUSE!

Have heard lots of good review about this place! So finally came to visit, since there was 30% discount with Fuzzie app! Super good deal!

Was very impressed with the side dishes served! Especially the deep fried yellow fish! The fish meat was very sweet! But it takes abit of effort to avoid the small little bones. The other side dishes served were pickled cucumber, kimchi, fermented squid and seaweed. I didnt really eat 3 of the 4 side dishes though! I wished they had shredded potatoes and fishcakes instead!

Assorted Soontofu ($21.90++): Comes with an egg, minced beef, clam, crab, squid, and shrimp! Was caught by surprise to find it to be in minced beef instead of sliced beef. Was sharing this dish with partner, and I was a non-beef eater. It was quite annoying to separate out the minced beef which was EVERYWHERE in the soup. So if you are a non-beef eater, best to order the other soontofus instead! We got the standard spicy level soontofu soup and it was already quite spicy! The crab and shrimp were quite a hassle to eat though. So if you are on a date or meeting someone for the first time, my advice is to best to avoid the seafood soontofus haha!

The soontofu pairs super well with the hot stone rice given! Although I found it slightly annoyed that rice is wasted because the rice stuck to the hot stone bowl and I dont really like to eat crispy hard rice (just like how I dont eat the crispy parts of rice in a traditional claypot rice lol)

Grilled Chicken (Spicy or teriyaki option) ($27.90++): Wanted variety so we got a grilled chicken meat dish as well. The spicy was so not spicy at all? The spice level was barely there! While ample portions of meat were given (since it comes with a hefty price tag too), the dish didnt really WOW me.

Freeflow iced/hot corn tea ($1++): They dont serve water here so we observed that most diners got this corn tea too!

Do remember to take your bottle of free yakult at the counter when you are about to pay! Hehe freebies excite me :)

It was only after ordering did we realise perhaps we should have ordered the combo meals instead, which may be more affordable although portions are also slightly smaller, will be back again to try!

Have visited Xin Yuan Ji at bugis outlet before for fish soup, but this is my first time at their bukit batok outlet and trying their fish head steamboat for the first time!

🧡signature fish head steamboat: enjoyed the soup! The fish was quite thick slice portions! It has silken tofu too! I only wished more yam was given though as we only got one tiny slice of yam.
🧡oatmeal prawn: my favourite oatmeals! Wished the prawns could be fresher though
🧡pickle raddish beancurd: quite an interesting dish as i dont see this dish often elsewhere. The sauce was more on the sweet than salty side! Very soft beancurd that is like silken tofu texture!
🧡thai style chicken: love the thai sauce that is drenched over the juicy fried chicken!
🧡homemade yam paste: was expecting orh nee like yam, but this had more coconut milk!

Pratunam Plus by Soi Thai So Nice at Bugis+!

Signature dry tom yum noodle ($7.90++): I rarely see dry tom yum noodles in Singapore so it was a must try for me! Loved the qq noodles, the crispy wanton skin. Lots of ingredients as there is minced meat, 2 meatballs, fried pork slices and a fried wanton with half boiled egg! This wasnt overly spicy. More on the sour side.

Tom Yum Kway Tiao Moo (pork, noodle) ($7.90++): This was actually had the same ingredients as the above! Just that it was in tom yum soup version. Be warned that this was quite spicy! So I ended up preferring the dry tom yum noodles instead!

Prawn donut ($6.90++): This was wayyyy too fried! Either overfried or it was re-fried. Other than that, it was a good prawn donut!

Nam Heong Ipoh Cuisine!

Visited Ipoh back in Sep 2019 (my second last overseas trip before covid struck)! Nam Heong Ipoh opened up a stall at 313 somserset foodcourt since June 2021! Have procrastinated long enough before finally coming to try it out! Was initially put off after reading not so good reviews about it online..

Tried the following food items:
🧡Chicken Sou ($2.20): Buttery flaky pastry crut with sweet bbq char siew!
🧡Egg Tart ($1.80): Flaky buttery crust with egg custard!
🧡Chee Cheong Fan with Minced Meat & Mushroom ($4.90): This turned out quite different from how I remembered it tasted like in Ipoh! This is different from our typical chee cheong fan. This is more like soupy char kway teow drenched in the mushroom minced meat sauce. I wasnt a fan of the tomato sweet sauce given though, and would have preferred if it was served separately
🧡Ipoh Hor Fan ($6.80): I quite like the broth for this! Tasted very homely, but with enough saltyness in the broth! So much better than the ones i had at old town white coffee which was bland and almost twice the price.

For drinks, we were actually looking forward to the white coffee, since it was the white coffee which it was famous for in Ipoh. We enquired and was told they were not allowed to serve the white coffee because they were right beside toast box haha. Hence we settled for the lemongrass lime drink.

Overall, the dishes are ok to me. But just price point slightly abit high. But you get aircon in the foodcourt!

Three Point Two Gelato and Coffee House!

Recently checked out this dessert cafe situated at Outram Park area!

Featured here are the following items:

🍨Signature Gelato Bun with pistachio: Special mention to this signature gelato bun! It is so unique! It is a baked buttery choux pastry with crunchy craquelin cookie crust! And it came with two little eyes, like a little cute monster munching on the gelato! Super in love with it! Opted for the pistachio gelato for the gelato bun and I think it went pretty well together! The pistachio gelato was nutty and I liked the roasted smokey flavour! Get this combination!

🍨Waffles with Chrysanthemum cocoa nibs and lychee yuzu sorbet: Waffles was crispy on the outside, and light fluffy on the inside! As for the two gelato flavours picked, I like how they were super refreshing! Very interesting flavours for both! The chrysanthemum gelato made me feel like I was drinking chrysanthemum tea! Super love the crunchy cocoa nibs in it! The combination of lychee and yuzu, my two favourite fruity flavours for gelato, was also super good!

🍨House Drinks - tropical sunrise: Fizzy sweet drink to quench all thirst!

They have lots of interesting gelato flavours! Will be back again to try more of the other gelato flavours! This place also specialises in durian desserts, so durian lovers will love this place! They have durian mousse, durian mochi and durian ice cream! Besides these gelato and drinks, they also serve some savoury sides too! This place is the perfect spot for after meal desserts, as they are open till 1230am on friday and saturdays Do check them out!

⭐️Beauty Strawberry Horlicks ($3.70): It is rare to find bbt shops that has a horlicks series! This drink was super unique too! It wasn't overly sweet! Remember to shake your drink well to taste the different layers together in a sip!

⭐️ Peach QQ ($2.80): Best drink to get if you like to have a bbt drink with lots of different chewy toppings! In this drink you get QQ pearls, coconut jellies and peachy bites!

⭐️Cucumber Coconut ($3.70): Very refreshing drink! The added cucumbers added a fresh healthy taste to it! Good as a thirst quenching drink!

Fried porridge! This is quite a new and unknown dish! I have heard lots about Old World Bak Kut Teh and have been wanting to eat it but havent had the opportunity to do so. Happened to be around Beauty World area and a quick search on the internet recommended me to try this fried porridge from Feng Xiang Bak Kut Teh so here i am!

Featured here is the FX Pork Cutlet Fried Porridge ($6.90)! The fried porridge was cooked with big fire flames, so the wok hei is super gao! It reminded me about the burnt taste that i experienced from the fire ramen restaurant at somerset, but this burnt taste wasnt as smelly as the ramen one. The wok hei taste here gave it a knotch of flavourful smoky taste! I love the silky smooth porridge here! Also special mention to the fried pork cutlet! It was marinated to perfection, juicy and flavourful! Would have preferred if more fried pork cutlet portions were given! (I had to ration it with my fried porridge haha. But at least i could have mouthfuls of the fried porridge with no meat as it was really flavourful!)

Check them out at 144 Upper Bukit Timah Road, #04-65, Beauty World Centre, Singapore 588177

Super long time since i last ate at songfa bak kuk teh! Opted for this as it was the more affordable food option at Jewel and something that we were craving for. Comfort food for rainy weather! It used to be my weekday work lunch meal at novena and clarke quay, eating it almost once every 2-3 weeks!

Favourite orders here are the sliced fish ($8.80) and slices pork ($7.80) with a side of youtiao (small portions $2)!

Finding the sliced meat and fish portion lesser than previous visits though!

Drunkard seafood noodle ($9): Got this because it was the star recommended item. First impression was not alot of ingredients - there were two prawns, few slices of squid and lots of carrots, baby corn and veg. So for a non-veg eater, there wasnt much to eat hehe. While the wok hey was strong, we found it slightly oily.
