Cafe Hopping
Dropped by mid-Saturday arvo and hung out with a friend. It was bustling but thankfully the cafe had plenty of seats available. What I liked about the cafe was that there was plenty of natural light and it was comfortable to sit around with a cup of coffee.
Their coffee was pretty good but I can't say that it was the best that I've had. The aroma of the coffee wasn't very fragrant but it had a light pleasant bitterness after every sip. If you're a fan of croissants, they have chocolate, almond and kaya pandan flavoured ones. I tried the almond croissant and it was a tad bit dry on the top and chewy, partially due to the many almond flakes. If pastries aren't your cup of tea, there are plenty of cakes and mains on their menu!
(Read that there were complaints about their service. It was my first visit and their staff were friendly and very attentive. Actively clearing plates and cups in addition to regularly checking up on their customers. Some seemed slightly inexperienced but it was nothing to fuss over.)
Alter Ego's pizza fries are amazing. It's so good that I wish to finish it on my own. Definitely a must try during your first visit! If you want to skip the pizza fries, the loaded taters are a good alternative.
Their buffalo wings are not a popular choice & for good reason. They were really a let down, because I've had way better buffalo wings (albeit overseas) and these ones don't even come CLOSE to being as good.
This cafe was surprisingly busy despite it's location (went on a weekend). Slight Australian cafe vibes there ✨
Since it was my first time there, I tried their highly recommended oven-baked molten eggs with melted cheese. It was pretty good, tasted light but still relatively well-seasoned. Of course, you'd have to finish it before the eggs cool off because you'd be nibbling on hardened cold cheese. The dish would have been a better one if served with a slice of artisan bread to soak up the yolk. Without it, the combination of yolk and avocados was a little odd.
If you prefer something light to go with your cuppa, don't hesitate to grab a croissant or any other pastries because they are pretty darn amazing.
Recommendations: earl grey croissant & cinnamon roll. SO GOOD.
Note: Coffee was decent, not extraordinary.
Populus' Wagyu beef grain bowl is arguably one of their most popular dish. I'd this odd impression that the barley grains would be soggy and gooey, like the consequence of boiling barley to make barley water. It came as a pleasant surprise to taste fragrant and crunchy barley grains mixed with black pepper. It definitely reminded me of Pepper Lunch and felt a lot like eating rice.
The portion was quite generous, as it should be for the price that you're paying. The wagyu beef slices were slightly dry for my liking, but overall, this dish was great!
The also popular buckwheat pancakes was thick and dense. Not your conventional fluffy pancake. It's a tad too sweet for my liking and I can't say that I was amazed by this. My friend struggled to finish it.
