After having a bowl of beef noodles soup across the road at Shin Kee, I crossed the road to Lai Foong to try their beef noodles too, as this too was recommended to me by a friend.

Ordered a bowl of dry beef slices kuay teow (they ran out of egg noodles), which only comes in 1 size for 10.00 RM. It was good, but I preferred the Shin Kee one as it was more flavourful. Having said that, it's probably just a matter of preference really.

When I ordered just this 1 bowl, the uncle asked if that was all. Makes me think that usually people order other things to go along with it, e.g. intestines, beef balls, etc.

Crispy fried chicken that’s fragrant, well marinated and tender. The flavors burst in your mouth with each bite, leaving you wanting more.

Weekends at KL city's foremost Hainanese kopitiam come with a clause: a 30-minute wait, minimum. But what fuels the unceasing crowds is the promise of Yut Kee's weekends-only Roast Pork (RM19.90). The elusive dish yields a yummy, crackling roast pork with apple sauce, alongside potatoes and vegetables. Since you've already made the trawl, make the most out of your experience. Order also the Roti Babi (RM9), a wonderfully greasy deep-fried bread with pork and onion filling. For a lighter breakfast, the Kaya Butter Toast (RM3) stars a fantastic homemade kaya that is, to our delight, also available in a take-home jar at RM4.80. End your meal with a classic local cake — either the soft, fluffy Kaya Roll (RM1) or the buttery Marble Cake (RM1).

No longer set in the outdoors for a rustic breakfast spot, Ah Weng Koh in the new ICC Pudu still deserves a visit for its tasty offerings. Take mum here for breakfast after a market run. It's essential you snag a seat upon arrival lest they all get snapped up in seconds. Helpers marked by tin cans in their hands and towels around their waist will take your order. The Hainan Tea (RM2.40) is a must-have of smooth, aromatic milk tea beneath bubbly foam. On bites, get the Signature Kaya Butter Toast (RM2.40) if you like your bread crisp or the Kaya Margarine Bun (RM2.40) if you prefer it soft and pillowy. Both feature lavish spreads of homemade kaya, boosted by butter and margarine. Order also the Soft Boiled Eggs (RM2.20), served in a do-it-yourself tin of hot water. Pro tip: Remove eggs after 5 minutes for the perfectly wobbly texture. The Hainanese family running the business are known to be prickly when it gets busy, so get your orders sorted before they come to you.

Stemmed from the dream of self-taught cook Mr. Kulwant, the stalwart Santa Chapati House is a secret known only to locals and those working nearby. For early morning chapati with a few colleagues, this airy down-to-earth shoplot is worth the walk. Their Chapati (RM1.50), freshly flipped out front, is served warm, fluffy and tasty enough on its own. But delight in the side of dhal that has a light yet creamy consistency. There are enough lentils in there to provide for a bite but not too much that it's too thick a sauce. Apart from the staple, there is also delicious Aloo Gobi (mixed vegetables, from RM4) for the vegetarians (or non) as well as an impressive Mutton Curry (from RM5). The small plate is filled generously with chunks of lustrously tender meat. The pocket-friendly prices that yields hearty dishes also make this a great locale for lunch, especially at month's end.

It turns out Hon Kee's accolades aren't limited to its early opening hours (from 6am) and their sashimi-and-porridge ingenuity. The time-honoured stall also serves up Chee Cheong Fun (RM3.50) worth trekking down to Chinatown for. Breakfast buffs will want to pay this one a visit, along with a friend to share the morning meal. The opaque, white flat rice noodles offer a slightly chewy bite next to its sweet-spicy sauces. Alternatively, succumb to the comfort that comes with their piping hot bowl of Fresh Raw Fish Porridge (RM6.50)! The foolproof combination of carp sashimi and warm porridge does it everytime.

Though now known glamourously as Mansion Tea Stall, Restoran Al Amnah retains its rough-on-the-edges decor and rickety seats. But what you're really here for is their prizewinner, a Roti Banjir Special (RM2.80) unlike any other. "Wobbly eggs, chopped roti canai drenched in dhal, curry and sambal, freshly made and served within minutes of ordering.", Tastemaker Tiffany waxed lyrical of one of her favourite breakfast dishes and we have to agree. Finished with a dollop of sweet-spicy sambal, the dish of glorified roti canai is extremely satisfying. On mornings that you wake up feeling unmotivated, grab a colleague and head here for this! Even if it doesn't get you back in the mood to work, at least you would've made your tummy very happy. Also good is the saltish Roti Sardin (RM3) and their perfectly pulled Teh Tarik (RM1.70) with extra foam.
