New Restaurants, Cafes and Bars in Singapore: November 2017

Get your tummies ready for plenty more exciting new finds this week. We checked out (yet another) acai spot in Katong, this time specialising in acai soft serve; ate our hearts out at an unassuming coffeeshop stall in Havelock that dishes out the most flavoursome zi char plates; and mopped our brows after a sweat-inducing but utterly satisfying meal at this Sichuan-style grilled fish specialist. What better way to cool down then than to join the queues for the lusciously creamy and cheesy ice cream from Japan? We hope you're hungry.

Serving hearty American burgers with a Japanese twist at its trendy, spacious Cineleisure location, B Burger is perfect for a friends gathering โ€” before or after movies. Sink your teeth into their best-selling The Baller Burger ($10.90) that comes with a medium-rare beef patty, buttermilk fried portobello mushroom, cheese and nori. Equally satisfying is the Bomchika Wow Wow ($10.90), karaage chicken stacked with a fried egg, sriracha honey and daikon pickles between charcoal buns. Something lighter but no less umami is the Osaka Corn Dog ($6.90), a cheese corndog generously topped with tobiko and drizzled with teriyaki and mayo. Add $3.50 to complete your meal with a side and a drink. We like the Nacho Soup ($3) and the Arnold Palmer ($4) โ€” a mix of their housemade lemon tea and grapefruit juice. The Campfire Concrete (from $6), frozen custard that is said to be creamier than regular ice cream, is topped with chocolate chips and toasted marshmallows for a warm, fuzzy happy ending.

Fruity desserts? Yes please! Taking over Cocoa Colony in 313@Somerset, Cafe de Paris is well known for its over-the-top Sweet BonBon, a tall bubble tea cup filled with sorbet, fresh fruits and non-dairy whipped cream. It's a lot to finish for one, so get a few friends to share this dessert. You won't go wrong with the Mango Sweet BonBon ($17.80) that comes with fresh mango cubes. Each order is made on the spot, so expect a 15 minute-wait during peak hours. This dessert shop from Korea also serves cake slices from Ciel Patisserie, like the Strawberry Shortcake ($8.50) and the Rose ($8.50). Have it with a hot pot of French Tea ($8.90) or a cup of Coffee (from $3.50) made with a house blend of coffee beans.

Get your tea fix from this Taiwanese beverage joint, which has recently landed on our shores. They're known for their fruit teas, which we think are perfect for the recent spate of scorching afternoons. If it's your first time, get the signature Mighty Luffy ($6.80) to share with a friend, a one-litre cup of fruit-infused tea filled with fresh fruits including watermelon, orange and lemon. Take Burppler Siming T's advice to go for a lower sugar level so as to relish the natural flavours of the fruit. For something more tropical, the peach tea-based Devil's Booster ($4.20), which comes with freshly squeezed orange and plenty of pineapple bits. For milk tea lovers, the full-bodied signature No. 23 Oolong Crystal Milk Tea ($3.80) is a must-try, especially if you love creamy ones with a good tea intensity.

This Telok Ayer restaurant specialises in food and sake pairing, and their collection of the drink spans across 20 prefectures, and counting! The Sake here starts from $8 for a 90ml serving, or you can get a flight of three 50ml shots for $24. No fear if you're sake-savvy, for the menu details the tasting notes very succinctly. The food menu is packed with umami-rich plates made for sake-pairing. Expect the likes of ginger-infused Miso Pork ($12), Takoyaki Fries ($12) and Nasu Dengaku ($12, baked eggplant glazed with miso and yuzu) or, for a meal in itself, the Kabuke Wagyu Bowl ($28) of wagyu striploin with onsen egg, garlic chips and truffle shoyu. This isn't just an after dark place. These guys serve a compact lunch menu of mostly rice bowls (from $15 for the simple but good Gyudon). Lunch time is also when a 90ml serving of the sake of the day goes for $5. Just sayin'.

Started by local celebrity Mark Lee and a few partners, this new spot in Kallang Wave Mall specialises in two things โ€” chicken rice and coffee. The reviews from the Burpple community have been great so far, with many praising the juiciness of the steamed chicken legs (that's the only part they serve) and the nuanced flavour profiles of the coffee from 13 Malaysian states. Burpple Tastemaker Xing Wei Chua really likes how 13 Stages replicates the choices at specialty coffee joints, albeit with more familiar Asian flavours and brewing methods. There are seven flavours of chicken to choose from, with the Assam, Samsui and Mala ($8.90 each, with rice and soup) highly recommended by Burpplers. The coffee menu comes with detailed tasting notes, but first timers may fare better with the Gems of 3 States Kopi ($4.60), which features three small jars of the coffee flavours of the month.

Can't decide on rice or noodles? Head on down to this new Japanese spot in Raffles City, which serves both tendon and ramen. For rice, consider their specialty Unatendon ($19.80), which sees a generous piece of juicy grilled eel alongside assorted crisply fried tempura, served with rice (add $1 for truffle rice). The elements are cooked well, and come together pleasingly โ€” great if you like tendon with a twist. As for noodles the Tonkotsu Chasu Ramen ($15.80) is a classic that will hit the spot. Burpple Tastemaker Xing Wei Chua loves the bite of the char siew, how the milky broth was rich but not overwhelming, as well as that beautifully molten centre of the soft-boiled egg.

Get your sashimi fix at this new spot in The Cathay โ€” perfect for a meal before catching a movie. The Sashimi (from $8) here is fresh, but what the Burpple community is liking so far are their sashimi rice bowls. If the Kaisen Don ($17.90) that Burppler Jocelyn Wong ordered is any indication, these guys are generous with their toppings. Hers came packed with slices of fresh seafood including yellowtail, tuna and good old salmon. Their Chirashi Don ($17.90) too is delicious, with cubes of similar seafood. Come by for their set lunch (available noon to 6pm from Mondays to Fridays), when the chirashi don goes for $15.90, served with miso soup and green tea. Pro-tip: Flash your student card and get an additional $1 off the set lunch!

For fuss-free meatless lunches in Tanjong Pagar, consider popping by this stall in Tanjong Pagar Centre. Run by the same guys behind vegetarian restaurant Idealite Singapore, grEAT serves a compact menu of vegetarian burgers. We weren't too crazy about the Grilled King Trumpet Mushroom Burger ($6.90 for a la carte) as the sliced mushrooms make it real messy to eat. Instead, try the Signature Smoky ($7.90 for a la carte) โ€” the patty has great bite and is nicely smoky, and the citrusy sauce brings everything together perfectly. We only wish that the patty is just a tad larger to fit the big and fluffy buns. Add $2 to get a small smoothie or small side salad. Oddly, there are no fries served at this burger joint, but they do have Crunchy Tempura Mushroom ($3) if you'd like. Pro-tip: Grab a seat at the spacious dining area beside Guzman Y Gomez.
